4 Affiliate Marketing Tips for Bloggers

13

Monetizing a blog doesn’t have to be difficult. If you look around you’ll see that there are plenty of ways to milk your blog for money. However, one of the most common and effective ways of earning a consistent, hands free income from your blog is through affiliate marketing.

Promoting affiliate products can give a big push to your blog in terms of monetary success. However, you need to do it properly to get the best results. Given below are four highly effective affiliate marketing tips that any blogger can use to get strong results.

Tip #1: Analyze Your Current Blog Design/Theme

Your blog’s theme matters a lot, so it’s important that you take a hard look at it to see if it’s fit for affiliate marketing.

If you’re using WordPress (which is highly recommended) then ask yourself, is your current theme good enough a.k.a customized for including affiliate ads or links? Does it allow you to promote affiliate products in a better way?

Tip #2: Focus on Few Affiliate Program to Start With

It’s easy to get overwhelmed when you’re starting to promote affiliate products on your blog. The number one mistake bloggers make is they try to promote each and every product that comes their way.

However, this will automatically lead you to failure because in order to succeed with affiliate marketing, you must focus on choosing only the best products. Your aim here is to go for quality, rather than quantity.

Do a background check on the product that you want to promote then go from there. Remember, being hasty will lead you to nowhere.

Tip #3: Try Out the Product You Want to Recommend

Successful affiliate marketing is not about selling, but it’s about building rock solid relationships. If you are able to create this bond with your audience, it’ll be easier to grow and expand your business. This is why you should never promote a product that you haven’t personally tested.

You have to analyze the product in every possible way to bring out its pros and cons. Most of the affiliate marketers fail to do this, making their recommendations ‘not-so-genuine’. The more you focus on giving value to your audience, the more you’ll convert them into paying customers.

Tip #4: Presell, Don’t Sell

As a blogger, you shouldn’t try to do hardcore affiliate promotion. It’ll be a turnoff for your readers because they won’t see any value in your sales pitch. The reason they’re reading your blog is to learn or find something new, which is why you should presell the product you’re promoting rather than selling.

Educate your readers about the ins and outs of the product. Shed light on why it works and why it doesn’t. Give them a deeper, enhanced understanding of why they should buy it.

They’ll appreciate you more for your honesty, something that will boost your profits in the long run.

Why You Are a Failure

6

If you are new to affiliate marketing you may be trying to figure out what niche or vertical you want to dominate.  If you aren’t, then you need to be.  Affiliates who focus their energy in one vertical have much greater success than a scattershot approach to promoting multiple products in many niches.

Focusing your efforts, in any endeavor, not just affiliate marketing will make you more successful.  When I speak with new affiliates the overriding theme that comes up is “where do I start?”.  This is a crucial question for new affiliates to answer because it can mean the difference between a successful career as a publisher or one that sends them back to technical school to become a welder.

So where do you start as an affiliate?  Everyone asks, what’s the hot category?  What offer is killing it?  There is no easy answer to this.  I suggest starting with your passion.  Then it will make it seem less like work and more like something you would probably be doing anyway, except now it is with a purpose.

Passion is what makes it possible to work a couple of extra hours a day or week to get your affiliate business off the ground and producing results.  The lack of it makes affiliate marketing drudgery.  I don’t discount that there are many successful affiliates who do not have a passion for subprime debt, yet do well at that category.  Is it possible to be passionate about sub-prime debt offers?

The passion I am speaking of, is the passion for creating something out of nothing and then watching that grow and improve steadily as you add more expertise and experience to your work.  It is passion that guides super-affiliates to dominate a niche.  It is passion that drives new and innovative ways of connecting with the right audience.

As an affiliate, focusing your time and efforts is essential.  The affiliates with the worst track records are those that jump at anything new or fail to completely immerse themselves in the niche they are attempting to have success with.  Constantly hopping from one niche to the next will only doom your career as an affiliate.  Success as an affiliate is more likely to come when you focus your attention on only one or two niches.

Even greater success comes when you start linking like niches together to create a user experience flow that you control, but the end user still feels like they are in control of their own destiny.  The game is to keep your visitors engaged throughout the time they are on your website or blog (and beyond with using email and social media links).  This means finding out what interests them and then delivering it.  If you allow your traffic to seep out of your control you will miss the opportunity to make a sale or generate a lead.

For example, if you have chosen bicycling as the niche you want to play in, you will first need to narrow down what are the most profitable categories within the bicycling niche.  While selling fully assembled bikes may earn you the highest commissions, you may find that your users are more interested in trying out a bike before they buy, which is hard to do in an online space.  But when you consider that bike shops sell more accessories than they do bikes, you may want to devote a good portion of your time to creating an accessories storefront in addition to promoting the sale of fully assembled bikes.  Finding new and innovative products to bring to your audience will endear you to them and encourage them to come back often to check out your latest finds.  In addition, there are many subcategories within the bicycle sales world, such as alternative bikes and trikes.  Each of these subcategories has loyal fans you need to connect with also.

Choosing what color your parachute will be is priority number one as an affiliate.  Without focusing your efforts on a specific niche you will almost always lose the passion because you will not realize the success you had imagined.  By focusing your efforts and really delving into the subject matter to see where consumers are trending you can increase the likelihood that you will have success as an affiliate.

Without focus and passion, your parachute will probably not open and, well, you’ll coming crashing back to earth bruised and bitter.  And when you crash, you lose the passion that drew you to affiliate marketing in the first place.  The key is to keep pushing deeper and deeper into the niche you have dedicated yourself to and you will eventually find a pocket of consumers that responds to your hard work and effort.

(Video) Marketer’s Guide to Pinterest

1

All eyes are on Pinterest, the social network that lets users collect and share images found on the Web by “pinning” them on virtual pinboards. The images span a variety of categories, from fashion, crafts, cooking, décor, fitness, and more. Users can follow the pinboards of friends and brands for inspiration and “repin” the images onto their own pinboards. Today, Pinterest is quickly becoming the fastest-growing social media site based on its huge popularity with women, as well as its unlimited potential as a marketing tool for businesses. “Pins” help companies promote their products, develop their brand personalities, drive tremendous referral traffic to their websites, and gain exposure among the Pinterest community. Now, MDG Advertising has produced an engaging video highlighting the facts, figures, and findings from its popular “Pin It To Win It” infographic.

The video details the social site’s demographics, growth, and potential to drive abundant traffic to company websites. Pinterest is especially popular with the most highly coveted markets—about 60 percent are female and 80 percent are in the 25 to 54 age demographic. Plus, Pinterest drives more referral traffic than Google+, LinkedIn, and YouTube combined.

The video goes on to cover the brands, both large and small, on board the pinboard phenomenon, such as Whole Foods, Etsy, West Elm, and Real Simple. These companies reflect the cooking, décor, and crafts interests that are prevalent among the Pinterest audience.

In addition, the video helps marketers navigate Pinterest’s features and terminology by demonstrating the “pin,” “repinning,” and “board.” It also shows how companies can leverage Pinterest for maximum response and referral traffic, whether by improving their image quality or promoting more than just a product line.

Study: Facebook Likes Are Junk

9

Another Study has questioned the value of Facebook likes. According to Dr. Tina McCorkindale, a professor from Appalachian State University, likes mean almost nothing for almost no one. The study she conducted found 75% of  those between 18-29, which are the core group of Facebook users never go back to a facebook page that they “like.”

In public relations, one of the basics of what we do is build relationships to hopefully get individuals to engage in some sort of behavior. It’s clear that the 18- to 29-year-olds are not as invested in an organization as the organization may think they are when they click the ‘like’ button or click ‘follow.’ It’s fairly consistent in the research that Millennials like organizations that give something back to them.

This is pretty interesting, especially since a recent study in February said that 99% of Facebook fans are useless.  Facebook is trying to convince more and more people that the real value of people is getting them to like brands or become fans, instead of driving people off of Facebook. The idea is that Facebook’s real value to advertisers has something to do with Facebook not driving sales or visitors to other websites – which is the core value of Google Adwords.

What does this mean? Well, marketers all know that you need to drive visitors off of Facebook to landing pages. If anyone ever proves that Facebook pages and “time” on Facebook is worth a lot less, then there is a huge problem with Facebook’s value.  Maybe they are a $1 Trillion Company? Maybe they are just a fad?

Google Ads Email Marketing Inside Adwords?

7

Crazy stuff happening with Google Adwords: they have added the ability to do opt-in emails inside of the adwords advertisement.  This is some pretty cool stuff, and really expands the ability to immediately interact with users and I honestly think provides a whole new opportunity for affiliates.

Google has really tried to keep affiliates from promoting offers, but this way affiliates can drive targeted users to email lists immediately, in theory auto-respond them and then build lists. I’m not sure of the details, as its right now only available for GMAIL users, but it seems like it could be a lot more.

Facebook Dismisses Adscend Media Suit

27

Just a day after Performance Marketing Insider learned that the Washington AG was dismissing almost all claims against Adscend Media, we have learned that Facebook has voluntarily dismissed all claims in a corresponding lawsuit. The dismissal comes less than four months after the original lawsuit, filed tandem with the Washington State Attorney General complaint alleging that Adscend used “misleading and deceptive tactics.”

This comes as a form of vindication from Adscend which immediately had protested the lawsuit, claiming that they had nothing to do with the issues, and that Facebook and the AG had not done their homework in investigating the issues involved.  It also is a huge win for the content locking industry, which came under fire because of these lawsuits and a few rogue actors.

Copy of the Dismissal is below, which was dismissed with prejudice meaning that Facebook has agreed that they can not file any additional claims based on this lawsuit in the future.

Adscend Wins Some Against Wash AG

12

Just a few short months ago the Washington State AG got up and told the world about how Adscend Media was involved in some huge scheme on Facebook and announce they were going to be suing them for a bunch of money, alleging fraud, deceptive practices and some other things.

Well, just yesterday, the AG of Washington dropped most of the claims against Adscend Media voluntarily, leaving many people to wonder why they were filed at first. From the start, Adscend Media had claimed that the lawsuit was very strange and made no sense and their story is seeming to be more and more plausible.

Now the complaint against Adscend Media, found below, seems to have lost most of its bite and what is left is basically a CAN-SPAM complaint. This is a very, very curious turn of events, because it means that the Washington AG, before any court proceedings, decided that most of their original complaint was not valid.

Unfortunately, after filling this complaint the media went after Adscend Media, claiming incorrectly they were involved with Malware, Clickjacking and a whole host of problems.

I personally sincerely hope that the AG, after parading Adscend Media all over the media as a fraudster, issues an apology. It’s obvious that, as Adscend Media claimed from the start, they did not do their proper investigation work or even contacted Adscend Media to determine what was going on.

(PMI-TV) Ian Fernando is a Snitch

10

Not everyone likes Ian Fernando these days, because he’s helping keep some of CPA networks a bit more honest. Affiliates are tired of offers going down and not getting credited by some less than ethical networks.

Ian Fernando, an active super affiliate, experienced his share of frustration throughout his affiliate marketing days, and is known for documenting the joys and pitfalls of the industry, using his blog and various other media to reach out to fellow affiliates. After numerous incidences involving redirected, capped and expired affiliate links without prior notification, and finding no imminent solution, Ian decided to create a tool that would allow him to monitor such changes to the campaigns he was promoting. Shortly thereafter, OfferSnitch was launched to the masses.

Murray Newlands interviews Ian and finds out what exactly OfferSnitch does and why some networks are embracing it, and others are running scared.

Cyberplex CX Digital Fire Sale

3

Cyberplex, the parent company of CX Digital, has announced that it’s selling is display business, Tsavo Media, as part of a financial fire sale.  Tsavo had recently been in the news after being accused by Yahoo of providing junk traffic, and being forced to repay monies based on this traffic.  Cyberplex, a public company, has been plagued by bad news, including dwindling revenues and a huge hit from the rebill scandals that rocked the performance marketing industry. Cyberplex’s revenue had decreased from $106M in 2010 to $55.5 in 2011.

Under the terms of the Transaction, the $33 Million consideration is to be satisfied as to: (i) $7,320,000 in cash; (ii) the assumption by the purchaser of the debt obligations of Tsavo Media and CX Ontario Holdings Inc. under the senior secured credit facility with American Capital Ltd. in the approximate amount of US$24,650,000; (iii) the assumption by the purchaser of a further debt obligation of a subsidiary of Cyberplex in the principal amount of $500,000 plus accrued interest, (iv) the transfer from Tsavo of certain internet domain properties valued at approximately $160,000; and (v) the transfer of 6,314,545 common shares of the Company held by former management of Tsavo Media, representing slightly less than 5% of the Company’s issued and outstanding common shares, back to the Company for cancellation. The purchaser in the Transaction is a company in which Ted Hastings, former President of Cyberplex, has a financial interest.

“Over the past 18 months the team at Tsavo worked extremely hard to overcome challenges presented by the situation at Yahoo!.” said Geoffrey Rotstein, CEO of Cyberplex. “But in the end, Tsavo in its current state does not hold strategic value to Cyberplex and continues to be an impediment to creating shareholder value at Cyberplex.”

Amazon To Start Collecting Tax in Nevada

3

Great news for affiliate and marketers, but not such great news for anyone who just might have moved to Nevada and uses Amazon.com a lot. Amazon has reached an agreement with the State of Nevada to start collecting taxes on Nevada residents.

According to the WSJ

The online retailing company said it will collect taxes in the same manner as traditional brick-and-mortar retailers, an agreement that is expected to raise at least $16 million a year for the state, according to the Las Vegas Sun, which initially reported the news.

This agreement was created in order to stop any possible Affiliate Tax from being passed in the Silver State.  It means that affiliates don’t have to worry about being part of some sort of nexus tax, and having their business shut down.

Monetize Your Niche Site

23

Niche websites are a great way to generate a consistent online income. There are many online marketers who have created their own niche empires starting from scratch.

Regardless of your approach towards niche sites, it’s important that you monetize them effectively. Eventually, the success of your niche website will be measured by the money it makes.

But before you monetize your site, you need to prepare it to get the best results. If you don’t lay a strong foundation – you won’t see much returns.

Here are 3 useful tips to help you prepare your niche site before you start monetizing it

Tip #1: Focus on Content and SEO First

One of the benefits of niche sites is that you know exactly who your audience is. You are sure of your readers and that makes the monetization process easy.

However, in order to make money from your niche sites you will need some high quality traffic coming your way. And that’s why you should first focus on creating content that’s optimized for the search engines. Not just any content, but high quality content that your readers want.

Search engine optimization helps you generate free and targeted traffic. So if you’re doing it right and have valuable content, it won’t take you long before you receive organic search traffic. But still, don’t monetize your site until you’re getting at least a few hundred visitors. Work on the content first, everything else will follow.

Tip #2: Capture Email Addresses from Day One

Many niche sites make the mistake of not capturing email addresses. But if you really want to build a long term business, you need to start building an email list from day one. It’s crucial that you get people on your list or else you lose all those visitors that didn’t take action on their first visit.

Also, see to it that your email subscription form is on every page of your site. Don’t miss out on any chances to grab their email address. Since you don’t know what page your visitors will land on, look at each page of your site as a landing page.

And once you start monetizing your site, all you’ll have to do is shoot one email to your list, and a surge of targeted traffic will come your way.

Tip #3: Think Beyond Google AdSense

Before you do any kind of monetization on your niche site, see to it that you have your monetization strategy in place. You need to zero down on multiple monetization methods and then choose what’s most applicable to your site.

Many niche sites forget the power of affiliate marketing and instead focus on running Google AdSense ads since they’re easy to setup. There’s nothing wrong in using AdSense, but you can earn so much more by promoting relevant affiliate products.

You can write reviews, create comparison charts between two products, interview the affiliate product owner, etc. Don’t look at your niche site as a mini AdSense earner. Go beyond that and leverage the true power of affiliate marketing.

(PMI-TV) Your Reputation Sucks

11

Affiliate Reputation: In this Performance Marketing Insider interview, host Murray Newlands interviews Kevin De Vincenzi, aka “The ClickFather” from XY7 Elite about affiliate management and making sure you’re working with the right publishers and advertisers. For those who don’t know, Kevin is one of the top media buyers in the space, spending millions of dollars a month buying media on a CPM and arbitraging it.

In this day and age, one of the most common pitfalls for affiliate managers is dealing with fraudulent registrations and low-quality leads in PPL programs. Kevin’s solution is to only work with merchants and publishers that have a good reputation. Kevin’s network, XY7 Elite, selects only the best affiliates and publishers to work with so that merchants are only working with honest publishers and publishers are only working with reliable merchants.
