Apple still Dominant in Mobile Traffic Generation

Chitika has released their latest report, which covers the second quarter of 2014, for mobile traffic.  The report is a valuable resource for marketers who want to target traffic based on the type of device that is being used.  This is especially popular for those who are promoting app installs, for example.

There are a number of interesting pieces of information that were gathered, some of the key points I’ll list here:

  • 52.3% of all SmartPhone web traffic comes from iOS devices (iPhones).  This is a drop of .2% from the previous report.
  • Samsung comes in second place for SmartPhone web traffic, producing 26.4%.  This is a 1.2% increase for Samsung.
  • Apple iPads (all versions) are driving 72% of global tablet based web traffic.
  • Android powered tablets (from all manufacturers) account for about 25% of the tablet web traffic.
  • The Microsoft Surface tablets still produce less than 1% of all tablet traffic.

There is, of course, a lot of other data contained within the report.  In the report summary, they commented on the two manufacturers that are dropping in web traffic (despite the rapid gains in the overall mobile traffic levels).  They said, “The largest share losses were experienced by HTC (-.4%) and BlackBerry (-.5%). The dips for both brands highlight the issues HTC and BlackBerry have had retaining traction in the North American marketplace with their latest flagship handsets.”

They also comment on some of the upcoming SmartPhone and tablet releases, which could shake up the numbers a bit. Specifically, they expect the latest iPhone models to come out and drive iOS traffic up, at least for a short time directly after the release.
