New Deals and Downloads from Prosper202

3

Prosper202 version 1.7.2 is now done and available for download. Or even better, get it Pre-Installed and ready to go with hosting partner Beyond Hosting. They understand Prosper202 better than any other host out there and will be there as you scale up to a million clicks a day and more. When developing this newer version, we looked over all the requests for features that have come in over the past few years and made a list of everything we could possibly add to make Prosper202 better.

Next we split the list into stuff that could be done now, what should be postponed for the next version when we do a rewrite. Here’s what we kept and built out for you:

    • Faster Redirects – Redirects are now 200-500% faster than before. For anyone who care about performance, you will appreciate exactly what this means to you. For everyone else, you are going to see more accurate stats, more conversions, and more profits. If you are looking for the one big reason to upgrade now, this is it!
    • Faster Landing Page Pixels – The new landing page javascript is optimized to load as soon as possible, instead of waiting for the whole page to load first. You should see less discrepancies due to this fix.
    • Mobile Optimized Stats – Have you ever wanted to check your stats while on the road? Your new Prosper202 1.7.2 now has a brand new mobile optimized mini stats view page. Load it up on your smart phone for a quick overview of how things are going.
    • Conversion202– We launched Conversion202 earlier as a stand alone application. With the new release of Prosper202, you will find it much easier to integrate your split-testing data from c202 into p202.
    • Better Mobile & Desktop Browser Support – We added better support for detecting mobile browsers. Prosper 1.7.2 detects 3x more browsers than 1.6.1.
    • 3rd party pixel fires – So, your traffic source happens to allow you to place a pixel that can then be used to further optimize your campaigns but your CPA network only allows one pixel per campaign. What do you do? Instead of having to choose between a tracking202 pixel or the traffic source pixel, you can now enjoy the benefits of both. Just place the new Universal Smart pixel and the new Prosper202 can intelligently figure out the traffic source that generated the conversion and fire the appropriate pixel for you.
    • Landing Page CTR Mod – This is one of the more popular mods developed by our friend Jasper. We now have it built in and have updated the mod to also generate the appropriate excel files for downloading. Huge thanks to Jasper for the mod and also Tomislav for the referer mod.
    • Subid Injection Mod – Thanks Mark from CTRtard.com for this cool mod, we thought it was an awesome timesaver and error preventer and rolled it into the official Prosper202 distribution.
    • Updated interface – Prosper202 was originally built for ppc, as affiliates like you found out it was powerful enough to power other forms of marketing such as social, email, display and more, it just made sense the we make changes in our ui to reflect that fact. It’s now easier for newer users to get up and running with less confusion.
    • Delete notifications – Have you accidentally deleted something in Prosper202 while working on campaigns? I know I have done this multiple times, as of this new release you will have to confirm deletes before they are committed.
    • Data management tools– Many times after accumulating a ton of clicks, the database becomes sluggish. There has always been instructions on how to manually clear out old data from all the tables, but for most people this is too time consuming and difficult. This new feature allows you to clear out all the click tables with a simple click.

Workout Products Makes Me Feel Dirty

6

I don’t watch that many late night commercials, but I have to be honest that more and more of the work out products make me feel almost dirty. After watching this commercial, I feel violated in so many ways.

Are they serious about these products? Is this some sort of subliminal message that I just don’t get that gets most of middle-America wanting to tug, swing and jerk their work out products? Perhaps the companies have must made every possible work out product known to mankind, and now are just trying weird crap to get attention?

Gap Closing Stores; Ebay Growing?

2

Gap Inc, the humongous discount clothing retailer , which runs the Gap, Old Navy and Banana Republic chains, detailed plans on Thursday to close 189 locations, or 21 percent of its namesake Gap stores in the U.S., by the end of 2013.

U.S. But even before the U.S. economy took a turn for the worse, tts sales in the U.S. have eroded considerably. In an interview on the eve of Gap’s investor day on Thursday, President of Gap North America Art Peck told Reuters that the company had lost its way by straying from high-quality jeans and other basics. “What’s expected of us is pretty clear,” Peck said. “I think it’s been us who’ve kind of wandered around.” Peck joined Gap in February following a management reshuffle.

This news is interesting to marketers because it shows that even though the economy is doing worse, and in theory people would be looking for discounts, companies like Gap are actually doing worse. Why? Its interesting to note that earlier this year EBAY actually had a net income last year of $476 Million on revenue of $2.55 Billion. That’s an increase of 20 percent from the previous year.

That news is extremely interesting for marketers because it shows that while people used to shop in discount outlets during bad times, they are now turning to the internet. That means that marketers have an opportunity to offer discount products first, because even while people have less money, they are still shopping ONLINE. Even with the economy, the growth of people getting online still raises each year and is considered an essential part of any household. Comparison shopping is made easier, as is any type of deal shopping.

Is this going to be a trend for more and more brick and motor discount outlets closing, making room for online deals?

PayPal Crashes Affiliates

5

According to PayPal technical support, emails received on October 11th, 2011 contained a code that inadvertently crashed many affiliates Outlook emails. As of 10pm EST on October 12th, 2011, the problem still was occurring, causing anyone receiving emails informing them about payments to their PayPal with an issue that they could not read those emails – or their outlook would become completely unusable. Technical support has responded that the issue was being investigated.

Paypal is a global payments system used by many affiliates for accepting payments from CPA Networks. It’s used by affiliates partially for it’s ease of use, and ability to accept payments worldwide. Many affiliates in other countries will only use this system because its safer and often better than the banking systems in their countries. Additionally money can often be taken out with a cash card.

Facebook Prices Jump

4

According to a White Paper released by Efficient Frontier and Context Optional, Facebook advertising prices have been growing at a fast pace. The paper claims that since June 2011, the prices of Facebook advertising has jumped over 25%, meaning that if the track stays, the prices will at least double by the end of the year from the previous year.

The paper claims that the increase in the CPC price is because of a greater competition in the marketplace.

According to the Financial Times, the price of advertising in the last year has actually risen over 74%, as more and more big brands take their product online.

TBG’s Simon Mansel said of the rise in prices, “In my experience of digital advertising this is the biggest growth that we have seen since Google. The main difference is that this is being fuelled by brand spend rather than [direct] response spend. That is an inflection point for the whole digital marketplace.”

The rise in price should concern marketers, as big brands decide to force a bidding war. This really shows that Brand Buyers are lazy – as they just throw money at advertising, without considering the ROI. In this case, more and more brand are “rushing” to Facebook without any plan.

I Hate Social Media

10

ADOTAS – OK, maybe I don’t actually hate social media. What I don’t like is the misplaced belief in the importance of  ”Liking” and “Friending” brands.

Personally, I can’t think of many brands with whom I’d like to be friends. Friendship is something I reserve for physical people.

Rather than “Friending” or “Liking,” what I would like from brands is to create value/utility for me. And to do that, they don’t have to be “Liked” by me or be my “Friend.”

To create value/utility, a brand most offer me something. That something can be a new and better experience using the product, it can be a better than expected repair experience when I least expect it, or great content which enriches my experience of using the brand. And it’s that value/utility which prompts me to recommend the brand to friends and family, whether through social media or a one-on-one conversation.

Research from PageLever shows that relatively few people re-visit a Facebook brand page after “Friending” the brand. This makes sense when considering that mostly people initially friended the brand in the first place in order to get a discount on something. Once receiving the discount, users don’t really have a need for their friendship with the brand. And that’s not really friending.

If there were ever a popularity contest among brands, the most “Liked” and “Friended” brand must be Apple. Yet Apple as a brand is barely engaged in social media (if it all). And they don’t have to, because they create products which bring real value/utility to users.

The reality is that 99% of companies aren’t Apple. And most product categories can’t elicit the kind of passion that users feel towards Apple. I can’t imagine many people being so passionate about their deodorant, laundry detergent or tooth paste as they are about Apple products.

The real innovation brought on by social media is that it made participating in the feedback loop easy. Anyone could post in a matter of seconds their feelings towards a brand in a place where anyone could see it.

But social media didn’t create the feedback, it just made it easier and more public. Marketers have known for years that “word of mouth” is the most effective form of marketing.

Unfortunately, too many marketers have jumped on the social media bandwagon and have pushed “Liking” and “Friending” as a way to improve the feedback loop to improve their relationship with their users. But merely liking a brand (just as merely liking a person) isn’t enough. That’s why research from Exact Target is warning of a potential backlash of ‘unliking’ brands (registration required — link thanks to Brian Solis).

Social media can provide value/utility if marketers use it in a meaningful way. Before every post, comment and tweet, marketers need to ask themselves if this post, comment or tweet is providing users with value/utility. It’s really that simple.

Tablet Clicks Dominate Market

1

Even though only 18 months, it seems that Tablets are now dominating the mobile advertising market: at least when it comes to clicks. According to a study released by British ROI Experts Efficient Frontier,  77% of all mobile advertising is currently showing on tablets. Similarly, the Brits claim that 60% of all mobile impressions and clicks come from the tablets too.

This comes on the heels of a report that mobile advertising spending will actually be over $1B next year, and according to eMarketer will jump enormously by 2014 to over $4.4 billion. This shows that despite a slow start, mobile advertising is starting to take off enormously and should be investigated by almost anyone looking for new sources in traffic.

However, I am curious about the study, because from what I’ve seen, it can only track advertising that is specific to the mobile market. If you are an IPAD user, you know that you can view non-mobile advertising on your IPAD for almost any site, and in theory Efficient frontier isn’t tracking those as “mobile ads.”

I’m also curious what exactly, in this case is mobile advertising? If you are seeing ads on a Tablet, using a web browser, connected to your LAN, how is this any more mobile than a Laptop? Since most tablets do a pretty damn good job of showing advertising in a normal webpage, what is the reason to differentiate a tablet user from any other user?

Are Twitter Ads Ready for Primetime?

1

In April of 2010, paid Twitter advertising started. However, despite the numerous articles and media attention, and more importantly attention within the performance marketing community, it’s nowhere near the size of Facebook or Google. What does this mean, and is Twitter ready for affiliates to use as a source of paid advertising?

Twitter is expected to do almost 140 million this year in advertising, and according to eMarketer, by 2013 it will do $400M. However, those numbers are probably just a guess since there is no historical perspective on how Twitter advertising growth, and more importantly, the actual effectiveness still being questioned.

In fact, most marketers have said that twitter as a free advertising tool is dead, and paid tweet companies have come and gone over the last year with almost no company making a profit paying people to tweet.

Currently there are three ways to advertise on Twitter

Promoted Tweets: These are tweets that show up in search results or can be targeted to followers. They show up at the top of the time line when a user views their account and can be geo-targeted. The model actually is pretty cool, as you only pay for ads that are engaged, such as clicked on or retweeted.

Promoted Trends: This is trend topics that allow users to explore possible current topics.  It sounds great for brands, but really not all that good for direct response affiliates. Also sold on a similar model that you only pay if there is engagement.

Promoted Accounts: If you want more followers, this is a great way to promote your brand. I’m not sure that this is effective for anyone, because more twitter followers doesn’t seem to equate always to better sales. However, unlike the “get more followers” services which aren’t targeted, this can be targeted to really those actually interested in your topics.

I’d love your opinions, are you using twitter? Have you found it effective for any affiliate campaigns or promotions?

Streaming’s Big Lie: The Future of TV Is Already Broke

0
Streaming was supposed to be the savior of TV—the rebellious new kid with no commercials, endless content, and an open bar of binge-worthy dopamine hits. But, as Doug Shapiro’s sharp, no-BS research reveals, the revolution is out of cash and looking for a loan. Streaming doesn’t just monetize less—it barely monetizes at all. For every streaming dollar generated, old-school pay TV is making it rain with three dollars in subscriber fees and seven dollars...

The Good, the Bad, and the SPO-ly

The Hidden Flaws Behind Ad Tech’s Favorite Buzzword. Supply Path Optimization (SPO) is my love-hate relationship in ad tech personified. It’s the reason I fell for this industry’s maddening brilliance—and why it sometimes feels like a bad rom-com where no one learns their lesson. At its core, SPO promises efficiency, transparency, and accountability, and when it works, it’s like watching a Rube Goldberg machine perform flawlessly. But when it doesn’t—and let’s be honest, that’s most...
