Worst SEO Awards Given

3

If a beautiful website wins a Webby Award will anyone be able to find it? Frankly, if a site isn’t search engine optimized, it really doesn’t matter how pretty it is, or how many Webbys it has won. If it’s not on the first page of Google, Yahoo or Bing, it will be invisible to almost everyone.

In an effort to bring the importance of Search Engine Optimization from out behind the curtain of the Webby Awards stage, we at SEO company Jungle Torch are taking this year’s Webby winners in 6 categories and putting them to the very real world test of seeing how they do when it comes to SEO.

Using our SEO company proprietary software, we did an SEO and link analysis to see how these ultra clever, oh-so-wonderfully designed websites actually do when it comes to being found by people on search engines. What we found is not very encouraging. It’s apparent that the Webby judges give no weight to the ability of the online masses to find any of their award winning sites. That means winning a Webby award is akin to a musical winning a Tony award but not having a theater to play in.

We may not have a celebrity presenter like Patton Oswald, a fancy stage or even actual awards to hand out. What we are is an SEO company with the practical capability to see how easy it will be for people to find Webby award winners when they’re looking to buy a car, electronics, or finding the latest fashion.

Search engines look at things like how friendly the coding is to SEO, how many unique inbound links a site has and how many bad or broken links there are. They also look at the source code to read the Meta tags. If they’re not there, it doesn’t matter how pretty the site is, how good the navigation is or how brilliant the content is, the search engine has no idea what the site is about and ranks it accordingly. Google also assigns a “Larry Page” ranking to each site. 10 is the best number. 0 is the worst. Google uses this number to rank the overall quality of a site. And when you see a 404 or 304 redirect, Google sees it too, and views these broken links very badly when it comes to search.

And now, without further ado, here are the winners of the JT So-So SEO awards:

Award for “Inactive Activism:” counterspill.org

This site, which allows you to search for oil spills around the world, is clever and edgy. Unfortunately, the site is not written in SEO friendly code and it has only 74 unique inbound links. It also hasn’t been submitted to the major search directories and it has more than 50 bad or broken links. That’s why no matter how good counterspill is at finding oil spills; you are unlikely to find it on Google.

Award for “Biggest SEO Bug:” http://www.beetle.com
The VW beetle has been popular for many decades. Not so its official website, which is written in Flash (search engines can’t read it), there are no Meta tags and it isn’t listed in the major online directories. Search the terms “VW,” or “New VW cars” and you won’t find this site anyplace.

Award for “bungled banking” site: http://www.manilla.com
Manilla lets you put all your banking accounts, bills and other financial items in one online location which is great. But unless you search for the site by name on Google you won’t find it. That’s because they have no Meta Tags, they have 78 broken links and they aren’t listed in any of the online directories.

Award for “beautiful site/ugly SEO:” http://www.ysl-experience.com
No site description tag, no Meta tags, a bunch of broken links, no directory submissions and a “Larry Page” ranking of only 2 means the beauty of this site is only skin deep…at least when it comes to SEO.

“Award for unsound SEO strategy:” http://www.urbanears.com
A consumer electronics site with no Meta tags, SEO code that’s unfriendly, no search directory submissions and a whopping 968 broken links makes this a site for techno geeks that they ultimately can’t seek—at least on search engines.

Award for “Seeking SEO expert: http://www.glassdoor.com
It’s possible that glassdoor.com might be better than monster.com when you’re trying to find a job. Just don’t try to find their site using a search engine. They don’t have any Meta tags, their coding is decidedly unfriendly to SEO, they have 137 broken links and they aren’t listed on the major online directories. They should look through their 3.5 million pages of jobs to find an SEO expert to employ.

In all, there are 70 different Webby award categories. We found none that were what you might call “award winning” in their ability to be found on search engines. Ah well, we’ll do this again next year. It would be a giant leap forward if the Webbys for 2013 gave one award to the site that had the best search engine optimization.

Wasting Time? Boost Affiliate Productivity

8

Affiliate marketing doesn’t have to be complicated, but it can get difficult if you aren’t really managing your time. If like many affiliate marketers you hold a day job, increasing your productivity can help you get the most out of your hours.

The question is – what does it take to really get things going in terms of boosting your affiliate marketing productivity? What can you do to ensure that you’re not wasting any time? The article below has the answer:

#1: Break Down Your Goals: There’s no reason as to why you shouldn’t break down your big goals or tasks. They can get overwhelming and you may end up not getting anything done at all. When you’ve got a lot of small goals lined up leading to the main one, it becomes easy to take action. Remember, every objective can be achieved if you take one step at a time, rather than rushing in.

#2: Record Your Ideas: It’s not uncommon to get great ideas while you’re in the middle of completing an important task. If you get distracted, you may get stuck up with your idea and leave your main task unfinished. This will affect your productivity – so the solution is to keep track of your ideas. Note them down so that you can come back to them later.

#3: Get the Worst Done First: One of the mistakes that many online marketers make is they put off the difficult tasks till the end of the day. This usually leads to procrastination as the task gets pushed to tomorrow. So make sure you’re take care of the task you are most likely to avoid, before you do anything. Do it the first thing in the morning and you’ll have a great day ahead.

#4: Leverage the 80:20 Rule: As an affiliate marketer you may end up spending a lot of your time learning rather than doing. By applying the 80:20 rule, you can take care of this. You can dedicate eighty percent of your time to taking action and the twenty percent to doing the learning. Set aside time for your forum browsing and email checking. Your aim is to get the most out of your time.

#5: Delegate Tasks: When you’re doing online marketing, there will be many mundane tasks to take care of. Try to delegate these tasks to your outsourcing team or your staff. Your focus should be on doing the most productive things so that you’re able to grow your web business strategically. The more you delegate tasks, the better it is.

#6: Use a Smart To-do List: Often when we create to-do lists, we end up adding tasks that are actually projects. What you need to do is create a smart to-do list which is made of up small, actionable tasks. These tasks have to be laid out in a crystal clear manner so that there is no confusion. Each and every task on your to-do list has to help you move forward towards your main goal.

How to Market Your Blog on Reddit

21

Reddit is one of the most popular social news sites out there, and it has been around for a long time now. The website can help you drive relevant traffic to your blog, if you know what you’re doing.

The best part about Reddit is that its community is really welcoming. If you can deliver real value with your blog post then they will be happy to bring it to the Reddit homepage. The community is used to sharing new and interesting stuff, which clearly means that your content has to be great to get noticed.

So how do you make sure your blog’s promotion is successful on Reddit? Let’s find out:

Focus on Using the Right Title

Reddit doesn’t have a place for description, so the users end up typing really long titles that clearly describe what the link is about. Even you can start off by using a long title that makes sense. See to it that it’s catchy and tells others what the link is about. Do this without compromising on the relevance factor.

The title that you use has to be evergreen. In other words, it should be relevant at all times. This is mainly because you don’t want to miss out on the long term traffic aspect on Reddit. And secondly, you don’t want the community to get a wrong impression about your link.

Spending time crafting the right title can help you get the kind of response you really want from Reddit. Of course, there are other contributing factors too, but the title improves your chances.

Post in the Relevant Category

Sometimes the Reddit response can be real bad just because you forgot to post your link in a relevant reddit. You want interested people to find your link and push it to the front page. Choosing the correct category will help you get noticed by the right people or else you may not get the kind of traffic you desire.

In case you don’t find the appropriate category for your post, just go ahead and post your link in a broader section. But still, see to it that it’s not irrelevant.

If your content is awesome and targeted, you will have no problem finding the right category on Reddit and drawing traffic from it.

Interact and Become a Part of the Community

Don’t forget that Reddit is not a marketing platform, but a virtual place to socialize and share interesting stuff. So it’s crucial that you become a part of the community, have fun and interact with others.

When people hit your Reddit page, they will see how active you are. If they don’t see many links or comments, they might just confuse you for a regular spammer. So it’s important that you also share other links and link to unique, interesting content that people like. Just posting links to your own blog posts is not a good idea.

Go out there, socialize, meet new people and have fun on Reddit. That’s how you market your blog using it – by not directly marketing it.

How to Create Compelling Web Content

6

Content is crucial when you’re building an online business. But you don’t need just any content, you need content that is compelling enough to get long term results.

There’s a lot of content on the web today but most of it happens to be junk clogging the search results. If you want to get noticed then you have to put in some real effort to make it useful and attractive to your target audience.

Given below are few ideas to help you make your content triumph over the other not-so-amazing content…

Share Your Best Ideas

Being an online marketer, you need to realize that your target audience wants to see the best content from you. Selling information is fine, but then again you have to win your prospects with great content before you actually sell something to them.

Going that extra mile and sharing remarkable ideas through your content can make all the difference. Contrary to popular belief you won’t “lose” by giving away great content. In fact, it will help you with your brand building and building strong relationship with your target audience.

Yes, you do need to draw a line as to how far you can go when creating and giving away content. However, you don’t have to worry about it, you will know the difference between premium salable content and high quality giveaway content when you start receiving feedback from your readers.

Make Innovation a Habit

Content that’s innovative goes places. It does take effort to innovate new content that is useful and worth talking about. But the kind of returns you get from it can be astounding. If you want to consistently create content that’s compelling then make innovation a habit.

Even if it takes you time to create innovative content, it’s fine – as long as you’re delivering value. Don’t fall into the trap of producing lots of average content that fails to make an impact. Treat your content as an art – where you take care of the design, implementation and execution very delicately.

The moment you bring in innovation into your content creation, you will automatically stand out from your competition. You’ll see for yourself how your readers value your content and treat it with respect because they know that truly remarkable content takes real effort.

Tell a Story Worth Listening To

It’s a fact that people like stories. They wouldn’t mind reading your story if it’s worth it – even it’s long. The point is to focus on creating engaging content by weaving stories that touch the right emotions of your readers. Give them a reason to not only read your story but also share it with others.

However, this doesn’t mean that you create stories out of thin air that have little value. Your story-telling has to be genuine and it should help your readers connect to you. The right story can help you create powerful content that gets read and spread for years to come. Bringing you targeted traffic at no cost.

StumbleUpon is Secret Source of Traffic

6

StumbleUpon is a great place to start driving relevant traffic to your website. Regardless of what niche you’re in, you can use the popular social media site to get more targeted exposure.

However, you have to keep a few things in mind to ensure that you are getting positive results from your efforts on StumbleUpon. Let’s look into them:

Make It Easy to Stumble

StumbleUpon is a site that is made up of a large audience with a diverse set of interests. So getting the right kind of visitors to your website using StumbleUpon can be easy if you know what you’re doing.

The first step that you should take towards finding success with StumbleUpon is to make it easy for your visitors to stumble your content. And the most effective way to do that is to add a StumbleUpon badge to your site. You don’t need to be a real techie to add this badge as it takes only a few minutes.

Build and Leverage Followers

Things can be pretty unpredictable when it comes to StumbleUpon since not much is in your control. But what if I told you could take matters in your own hands in terms of traffic? Yes, by building a strong follower base and sharing your content with them you can do that.

However, grabbing followers on StumbleUpon is not as simple as Twitter but it’s very much like it. Even though the process can be a bit slow, it can be worth it in the long run since StumbleUpon has an active user base.

Once you have a good amount of followers or friends, it will be a lot more easier to have your content spread on StumbleUpon. However, make sure that you are not indulging in any unethical practices to boost your follower count because that wouldn’t do any good and you’d end up wasting your time/money.

Go Beyond Your Own Content

No, it’s not a crime but still stumbling your own content is frowned upon and should be avoided. However, this doesn’t mean that you should never do it, but it just makes more sense to have other users stumble your content than you doing it yourself.

StumbleUpon is a community that is very social and friendly. So as long as you’re not indulging in blatant self promotion you’ll do fine. The key is to give real value to the community in your own way rather than spamming it. That’s how you become a valued, respected user of StumbleUpon.

Use Appropriate Titles/Descriptions

One of the reasons why your content may not get stumbled much is because its title and description are unclear. You have to see to it that you don’t leave users guessing as to what your content is about.

Don’t make the mistake of using clever titles that are confusing. Be as direct and clear as possible. And write descriptions that are simple and to the point. Your content won’t get noticed even if it’s great without a good title and description.

Google Kills 134 Million Ads

13

Google has been nice enough to reveal, among other things, that in 2011, they disapproved over 134 Million ads for a variety of things, including spam and fraud. On top of that, almost 800k accounts were completely killed, banned from using Adwords.

According to their blog:

Ads that are in violation of our ads policies aren’t allowed to be shown on Google and our AdSense partner sites. For many repeat offenders, we ban not just ads but also advertisers who seek to abuse our advertising system to take advantage of people. In the case of ads that are promoting counterfeit goods, we typically ban the advertiser after only one violation. Here are some metrics that give some insight into the scale of the impact we have had over time, showing the numbers of actions we’ve taken against advertiser accounts, sites and ads. You can see that the numbers are growing—and growing faster over time.

Even in this ever-escalating arms race, our efforts are working. One method we use to test the success of our efforts is to ask human raters to tell us how we’re doing. These human raters review a set of sites that are advertised on Google. We use a large set of sites in order to get an accurate statistical reading of our efforts. We also weight the sites in our statistical sample based on the number of times a particular site was displayed so that if a particular site is shown more often, it’s more likely to be in our sample set. By using human raters, we can calibrate our automated systems and ensure that we’re improving our efforts over time. In 2011, we reduced the percentage of bad ads by more than 50 percent compared with 2010. That means the proportion of bad ads that are showing on Google was halved in just a year.

Of course, they didn’t reveal how many accounts were accidentally shut down for no reason. While Google may not be as bad as Facebook, they are notorious for occasionally shutting down accounts for no reason, even after the ads were approved for months. Why? Because they were too effective?

Facebook Phone?

3

After a horrendous week of basically being told by almost everyone that they suck, Facebook might have some good news on the horizon? According to various reports, it seems perhaps that Facebook is secretly (or not so secretly) working on a Facebook phone. Yes, coming perhaps in 2013 will be a mobile smart-phone, all about Facebook, with everything you could want about..well, Facebook.

According to the LA Times:

Rumors and reports that Facebook has been working on building its own cellphone go back to 2010 when Tech Crunch reported that two high-level Facebook staffers had been tasked with developing a Facebook phone in secret.

The rumor resurfaced in 2011 when All Things D reported that the company was working with the Taiwanese cellphone maker HTC to create a cellphone, code-named “Buffy,” that has the social network integrated into “the core of its being.”

While Facebook refused to comment on Buffy specifically, the company did send All Things D the following statement: “We’re working across the entire mobile industry; with operators, hardware manufacturers, OS providers, and application developers to bring powerful social experiences to more people around the world.”

However, some people are asking, why does anyone really want a Facebook phone? CNET Columnist Chris Matyszczyk doesn’t think it would be a good idea:

In Facebook’s case, I would be surprised if there were too many human beings for whom the essential idea of a phone made by Facebook is terribly exciting. The Facebook brand isn’t that strong. It’s more of a utility. It isn’t the sort of brand where acolytes cannot wait for the next thing to come out of Facebook.

SlashGear agrees and thinks the rumors are complete bull-hoey:

Facebook hasn’t been the minor player the social segment for some time now, and chasing that position in mobile would do it few favors. Today, the smartphone market is dominated by two platforms, iOS and Android. Microsoft’s struggles to broach that dominance with Windows Phone (and its own untold billions) shows just how difficult a challenge it can be.

Mark Zuckerberg already has a footprint on each. Why should it threaten that position by becoming a bit-player in its own right? It’s a zero-sum game, really, distracting your development investment toward a platform with very few users from rivals with millions.

The Guys at IMGrind however seem to like the idea:

When you think of examples like Amazon and Apple that have gotten vertical with software, hardware, online stores, etc, it is obvious how profitable it can be to own and control more of the user experience. Whether or not Facebook pulls the trigger and builds a mobile device we will have to wait and see, but one thing is for sure, they will not rest on past success, they will continue to test and try new things, that’s what got them to this point.

What are your thoughts on a Facebook phone?

Facebook is Fraud Says Publication

4

Rob Enderle, of TechNewsWorld has written an article that claims, among other things, that Facebook is nothing but one huge Fraud. According to the publication, Facebook is not being honest to anyone about their company and most of the statistics that they claim are just plain made up. It’s an interesting read, that examines both the actual user base and the value of the advertisements, combined with the reality about the company and who really owns and runs it. Here are a few interesting points:

The number that is officially tossed out is 1 billion users, and there are 1 billion people who in some way come into contact with Facebook. But the implied assumption is that this 1 billion is connected to making a profit, and there lies the rub. However, the person being misled, which makes this interesting, isn’t the investor — it is the advertiser.

Stop for a moment. Name one ad you have ever seen on Facebook? Just one. Now if you can, and most I’ve spoken with can’t, name one time you have actually bought something based on that ad. I’ve bought things after seeing Internet ads, TV ads, magazine ads — but I’ll bet even if you remember seeing a Facebook ad, you haven’t ever bought anything based on it.

Also:

Facebook is marketed as a corporation, but it uses a unique format that lets Zuckerberg exclusively control the company. In short, it isn’t really a corporation as we would think of it; it is more like a limited partnership in which the limited — and virtually powerless — investors are represented by a powerless board.

I would think a structure like that would need to be fully understood by investors, because they should fully understand the risks of having a 28-year-old-billionaire in charge without real oversight before investing.

We did get a warning when Zuckerberg used investor money to buy Instagram, a tiny company, for $1 billion, as if it were out of his own pocket — no corporate oversight or board involvement.

Facebook COO Begs for Clicks

13

It seems things at Facebook are getting a little bit scary, and Sheryl Sandberg the COO of Facebook is now personally asking people to click advertising on Facebook to help their revenue. At a speech at Harvard, she is reported (according to Reuters) to have begged:

Sandberg, who visited her alma mater with her parents and two children, only once made reference to the IPO in her speech. After urging the graduates to use Facebook to stay in touch, she said: “We’re public now, so could you please click on an ad or two while you’re there.”

While we’re pretty sure that this is a joke on her part, is does seem more than slightly relevant. Facebook has been universally bashed this last week, after a less than stellar IPO and worse, continued questions about their advertising models.

More and more studies are showing that Facebook ads aren’t really that effective and that their horrible customer service is turning off brands left and right.

According to the LA Times:

A lot of the major brands have taken a step back this year in terms of reassessing their (Facebook) spending,” said Debra Aho Williamson, an analyst at online ad metrics firm EMarketer Inc. “They spent a lot last year and may be taking a second look at the value of it this year.” That reality may have spooked big investors, who stayed away from buying shares when Facebook began trading May 18. The fallout from its troubled start as a public company has drawn investor lawsuits, regulatory scrutiny and calls for congressional hearings.

Only about 1 in 1,000 Web readers clicks on the average display ad. On Facebook, that number is closer to 1 in 2,000, according to Webtrends. Even ads sent by unsolicited postal mail generate a response rate that is many times higher, according to published industry numbers.

Creating a Wildly Popular Blog

14

The success of your blog depends on a number of factors. Getting all of them right takes time and effort. Gone are the days when you could just put up a blog and have readers eat out of your hand. Today the blogosphere is much more competitive. And making a mark has become a lot more difficult.

But still, there are blogs that have managed to pull it off. They not only got the traffic, but also managed to build a strong brand. In short, they knew exactly what it takes to create a popular blog from scratch.

So what’s their secret?

There’s no real secret when it comes creating a wildly popular blog. However, there are a few things that can improve your chances. And help you take your blog to the next level. Ready?

Let’s go:

#1: Understand that there’s No Silver Bullet

If there’s one thing that can make your blogging journey even harder, then it has to be the never ending search for the magic pill. The pill that doesn’t exist.

In the beginning, it’s all about putting in your brain sweat and getting high on caffeine. Focusing on your goals and keep pushing without expecting much. That’s how you keep your expectations low and hopes high.

The moment you accept that there is no silver bullet, your blogging journey becomes a lot more easier.

#2: Be Flexible with Your Planning

A good blog is worth reading. If you want your blog to become popular, you can’t just follow a rigid plan and see growth. You have to be flexible enough to change your course as you move forward.

You have to become a good hacker. You have to learn from the other blogs around you. You have to be ready to do whatever it takes to find success. The more easy it is to alter your plans, the better results you will get in the long run.

#3: Find Your Blogging Voice

One of the worst mistakes you can make as a blogger is to sound like Darth Vader – dry with no personality.

People that subscribe to your blog and read it are the ones who are going to spread the word about it. And they want to see your personality shine through it. So give your blog a voice, and make sure it’s yours.

If you try to create a blogging persona that is not you, your audience will have a hard time getting comfortable reading your stuff. And that ultimately becomes the hurdle in your mission to make your blog popular.

If you’re good at creating actionable content, do that instead of trying to sound all dramatic. The clearer you are about your blogging voice, the easier it will be for you to connect with your readers.

#4: Have a Clear Vision

How your blog shapes up and what kind of popularity it achieves starts with your own clarity. If you’re not clear about your blogging goals and what you want to achieve out of it, no amount of marketing can help you grow.

Having a clear vision allows you to make better decisions in more than one area. It helps you get your content creation and marketing in sync. And lets you create a strong balance that makes it easy for you to take your blog to the next level.

Mitt Romney Investigated by FTC for False Advertising

16

The FTC announced today it was launching a lawsuit against Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney for Deceptive Advertising. After a several week investigation they concluded that some statements made by Romney’s campaign constituted false and deceptive advertising practices, and more importantly, were fraudulent as they did not provide proof or actual studies to back up the claims.

Wait is this true? Of course not!

The FTC is not investigating Romney for deceptive advertising anymore than they require diet companies to prove absolutely without a doubt that their claims are true.

Oh, you say? Diet companies are required to prove their claims, but Presidential Candidates can spout any bull-crap they want?

Let’s not forget: Mitt Romney is a politician, and a damn good one. He was the Governor of Massachusettes, the most liberal state in the Union, and supported many, many liberal ideas from gun-control, to gay rights, to heavy taxes on the rich. Now running as President, he claiming he never supported those things, and is taking a different stance in order to try to win the race. Let’s at least be honest here: he’s lying to win the Whitehouse, but so do most people running for office.

So why isn’t he being charged by the FTC, along with dozens of politicians a week for deceptive advertising? They are clearly breaking the law, since the law prohibits deceptive advertising, right?

I’m not saying let’s actually go after Mitt Romney and other politicians but instead asking that we honestly examine why exactly the FTC is going after affiliate marketing companies and not Governor Mittens.

What about what large brands say about themselves, shouldn’t they be sued by the FTC?

Campbell’s claims their soups were “MMmm MMMmmm Good.” I personally think that they are basically “Umm..umm.. crap?” Have they proved that their soups were really good, or that most consumers think they are good? Doubtful. 9 out 10 people who eat Campbell’s soup probably agree with me.

I’m not even sure ANYTHING from McDonalds should quality as food. I’m not really sure what is in a Chicken Nugget, but I know its not Chicken.

Turns out also, Nutella isn’t really good for you either. Really, you mean that a spreadable mix of fat and chocolate isn’t exactly the best thing to feed your kid? Did anyone REALLY think that it was good for them?

Clorox Wipes claim that they are “Tough Cleaning in a Thick Wipe.” It’s on their case; I know because there is one sitting on my desk right now. Is it really, “Tough Cleaning?” Can you prove its tough, and what is that compared to? Is it tougher than a MMA fighter with a case of towels and a blowtorch? Also, the scent claims to be “Lemon Fresh.” Really? Smells like formaldehyde to me.

As much as I would like to see McDonalds sued for claiming they actually serve food, I’m more looking to see the FTC start acting fair.

Seriously guys, I think by now the general public should know that Acai berries do nothing more than give you a bad case of diarrhea (and thus, in theory weight loss?) and that working from home stuffing envelopes will only give you a nasty paper cut.

There comes a time where people need to grow up and stop believing everything they read.

That is what this comes down to: is the FTC going to far in “protecting” consumers from things that should be obvious? Are Americans really so dumb that they cannot make decisions for themselves and should the government be there to ensure to be their mommy? What point is it too ridiculous? I understand that the guys at the FTC are doing their job, and I completely support their work… still shouldn’t we expect more from the general public?

What’s your opinion? Are we really that dumb as a society?

Google Penguin Killed You? How to Recover

35

If you’re a webmaster or blogger that has been hit by Google’s Penguin update, then you should continue reading.

The Penguin Update was launched by the big G to take care of websites that had been clogging its results with spammy pages. Most of the websites caught by the update were guilty of artificially inflating their rankings by using shady tactics that violate Google’s guidelines.

If you are impacted by this update, you obviously want to know how you can recover from it. Even if you haven’t been hit by it, you should take proper measures to safeguard your site from the dreaded Penguin’s peck.

Here are a few tips on making sure your website nurse itself back up and recover from the impact of the update:

#1: De-optimize Your Site: Over-optimization is something you should stay away from. Because Google is keen on penalizing sites that have done too much SEO.

#2: Indulge in Quality Link Building: This one goes without saying – you have to start getting more high quality links to your website. No second thoughts on that. It’s one of the best ways to send a green signal towards Google.

#3: Go for Natural Anchor Text: No matter how hard you try to fake it, Google somehow figures out that you’re not natural. Using the same anchor text for every other incoming link to your site is not a good idea. You should try to keep it as natural as you can.

#4: Say Bye-Bye to Links in Blogrolls: Removing links from blogrolls is a step that you should take right away. Why? Because even though these links are technically not spammy, they might get you penalized. And you don’t want to take any chances.

#5: Stop Using Exact Match Domain Names: Yes, the exact match domain names used to be hot way to get your website ranked for that particular keyword phrase. But not anymore – it’s much, much harder now to convince the Penguin that your site is not spammy. The solution is to focus on brandable domain names.

#6: Add Google+ Sharing: If you’re trying to make a good impression on Google then you should enable Google+ sharing on your website. It makes your site look more authentic and approachable.

#7: Look Into Problem Areas: Go through your website and see what you can fix. Try to make it as genuine as possible. Remove any bad content or links that look spammy. The more you work on the problem areas, the better.

#8: Create Better Content: Making your site more valuable for your visitors in terms of content is really important post Penguin. It not only makes your site more real and useful, but also attracts natural links from relevant websites, giving you an edge over the competition.

#9: Stop Taking Short Cuts: It’s about time you think long term for your website in terms of ranking. You have to understand that it takes time to reach the top, and you have to put in real efforts to reach there. There’s no magic pill.

New York To Ban Anonymous Posts?

11

New York Legislators have introduced a new bill, called the Internet Protection Act that would make it illegal to posts anonymously. The purpose of the bill was initially started to prevent cyber-bulling, but also includes attacks against businesses, and “baseless political attacks” when posted anonymously.

According to the author, one James Conte, “With more and more people relying on social media and the Internet to communicate and gather information, it is imperative that the legislature put into place some type of safeguard to prevent people from using the Internet’s cloak of anonymity to bully our children and make false accusations against local businesses and elected officials.”

Notice the part where they added “baseless political attacks” in order to protect themselves.

While at the outset this may not seem like something that affects our industry, it does. Anytime that the right of a person to speak their word, whether its anonymously or not, is restricted, it can be used to intimate advertisers. Much of performance-based marketing relies on viral based marketing about competing products.

Would you like to be in a situation where a company with a lot more money, decides to go after you because you were promoting a competing product without identifying yourself?

Any restriction on free speech is not only unconstitutional, but plain stupid.

On that note, James Conte you are an idiot for proposing this law. And that’s not “baseless” at all.

The Good, the Bad, and the SPO-ly

The Hidden Flaws Behind Ad Tech’s Favorite Buzzword. Supply Path Optimization (SPO) is my love-hate relationship in ad tech personified. It’s the reason I fell for this industry’s maddening brilliance—and why it sometimes feels like a bad rom-com where no one learns their lesson. At its core, SPO promises efficiency, transparency, and accountability, and when it works, it’s like watching a Rube Goldberg machine perform flawlessly. But when it doesn’t—and let’s be honest, that’s most...
