Prepping Your Mobile Strategy for 2016 Olympics

The 2016 Olympic games are just around the corner.  While they are taking place in Rio and will be largely viewed on television, there is a lot of opportunity for digital marketers too.  As with all digital marketing today, mobile is going to be the main focus, and where there is the most opportunity.  Whether you are someone who markets in a sports related niche or not, the chances are great that there will be some type of opportunity for you to capitalize on the Olympic games, as long as you do it right.

Since 2012 the mobile ad spend has gone up by 684%, which is incredible.  This obviously means that there are millions of dollars to be made for marketers and brands during the Olympic games, which last just under a month.

Even back in 2012 when the summer games last took place there was a lot of investment in digital and mobile marketing strategies, and that is going to be far bigger this year.  Traditional TV viewership has dropped by about 22.5% for the millennial generation since the last Olympics aired, so this may give some marketers an opportunity to build an audience around live or even replayed Olympic events.

It may even be possible to live stream certain events on services like Facebook or Periscope.  Of course, you need to be careful to be in line with all the copyright laws, but a savvy marketer can find ways to do it legally.

While it may be a little late for capitalizing on things like flights and hotel bookings to the games, there are always last minute activities that need to take place.  Looking into these options may be very profitable given that people who wait to plan travel till the last moment are willing to pay significantly extra.  If you are able to match up those who want to travel with service providers, it can be a win-win situation.

Of course, these are just a few simple ideas for marketers.  There are endless opportunities, even if you just run an Olympic themed promotion for a completely unrelated business.  The point is, don’t let this once every four years opportunity pass you by without at least attempting to cash in.
