Google Analytics Improves analysis with Content Grouping

Google has recently announced an update to their Google Analytics tool that should help many marketers understand more about what types of efforts are having the biggest effect.  Marketers have long complained that it was difficult to accurately see what types of SEO investments had the best ROI, and this new update is set up to help in that area specifically.

The update allows site owners to create content categories, which will help marketers to get more accurate insights into all of their digital marketing efforts.  By segmenting the pages into different categories, it is possible to see where visitors are spending the most time, what types of posts are drawing in the most visitors, and many other valuable pieces of information.  Many of these things were possible in the past, but it was quite difficult to gather all the information in one place, which this update does quite easily.

Google’s blog post about this update provided a couple different examples of how marketers can benefit from this new analytics option:

  • A marketer running an eCommerce site that has categories for T-Shirts, and another one for Jeans, will be able to segment these apart so it is possible to see which specific URLs are getting the most conversions.
  • News sites can segment their site based on the general topics that they write about.  This can help them discover which types of stories bring in the most users, and keep them on the site the longest.  Comparing, for example, environmental stories with sports stores can help identify what the target audience is most interested in.

Google has set up the grouping feature to be quite easy to set up and work with.  You can use tracking codes, rules or extraction options to segment different areas of the site.  Specific instructions on how to set each of these up are available from within the Google Analytics tool.

This new feature from Analytics will provide marketers with a lot of valuable information, if they choose to take advantage of it.  Setting up logical segments to the site can really help provide site owners with the type of information they need to take profitable action.
