Many people today pay publishers and others to gain exposure to their content. This is especially popular, for example, with celebrities that may be paid to share a particular story about a product. The celebrity in this case would get paid based on how many views the page received. Publishers of any type who have a lot of followers on Facebook have the potential to make a significant amount of money using this strategy. Up until recently, however, distributing content that you have been compensated for has been against the Facebook TOS (unless you first get permission from Facebook).
Late last week, Facebook eliminated this restriction for all publishers. Anyone running any type of verified Facebook page can share articles, photos, links, videos or any other type of content that someone else is paying them to publish without first getting permission from Facebook. Of course, this also means that Facebook won’t be getting a cut of the money made.
While this is going to open up a lot of opportunities for celebrities, it will also give many marketers additional options. More and more people today are getting verified Facebook accounts based on popularity in real life, YouTube or online in general. Building a large audience is also becoming easier and easier for many people.
Those with large followings will definitely want to look into this as a potential revenue stream going forward.
The one restriction is that Facebook will require publishers to include the line, “[Publisher] with [Brand]” along with any post. This is intended to make sure that everyone knows that the publisher is getting compensated for the post.
