The feature that made Twitter famous, their 140 character limit, is slated to get a huge update in the coming months. Reports are saying that the limitation will move from 140 characters up to 10,000 in the near future, which is considered by many to be the biggest change to the site ever.
When the reports were first made many users were quite upset. Twitter clarified that the text that is displayed will still be limited to 140 characters, but an option to click to expand will be added to allow for the additional text. As with any change, some people are still unhappy with the change.
Twitter’s CEO, Jack Dorsey, responded saying that there are already many ways around the 140 character limit. Some people post images of the words they want to share. Many others will use third party services that will break up text into multiple tweets.
The update being considered by Twitter will make these types of things unnecessary and offer users many additional benefits. First, longer tweets will be easier to read because they won’t have to be spread out over multiple messages. Next, they will be easier to find and search since the text will be text rather than images.
For marketers this is likely going to be a very good change, especially if you use Twitter ads. The more text that Twitter has access to, the more accurate their ad targeting can be. This, of course, can help improve the results of any marketing efforts.
There is not yet any set date for when this update will be rolled out.
