Black Friday Ads Already Taking Over in October

According to a recent report from AdGooroo, paid advertising is already seeing a major uptick in ads targeting black Friday terms.  At the time the report was conducted there was still nearly two months until the biggest shopping day of the year, but marketers are looking to get in ahead of the game it seems.

The report looked at text ad activity with the term ‘black Friday’ or some combination of words including those.  From August 2nd to September 26th, they found that advertisers were spending only a total of $12,368 on these types of terms.  In the following week (September 27th – October 3rd), however, that number shot up by more than 324% ($52,417) and it is continuing to grow.

This is a big increase compared to last year where the report found that there was no major raise in this type of ad targeting until very late in October.

The report found that of the 277 advertisers who were targeting Black Friday keywords, Amazon was the largest investor at nearly 10% of total ad spend.  Target was next with 7%, PromoPanther.com (4.1%), Groupon (3.7%) and Walmart had 2.2%.  Many other advertisers were jumping in as well.

These brands will almost certainly continue ramping up their spending over the coming weeks.  If you are looking to get in on Black Friday advertising, make sure you are getting your ducks in a row now or it might be too late.

This study can be seen HERE and was conducted looking only at US Desktop Google Text Ads.
