Are Facebook Brand Pages Getting a Boost?

One of the difficulties many marketers face on their Facebook pages is that people will ‘like’ them, but then hide their content so it is never seen.  This can make it more difficult to accurately estimate how many people will see a post and how successful you will be with any marketing efforts.  People hide a wide range of different types of content, and many people use the hide feature every time they see something that they don’t like.

In some cases, people will hide one post not realizing that it will make it so they don’t see as much content from the entire page that published it.  Facebook believed that this is a significant problem and has recently made some News Feed algorithm changes to help address the issue.

Going forward, the more posts or pages that you hide the less strength the hide feature will have in determining what is in your news feed. To put it simply, those who were previously hiding things from your page are now more likely to see new posts that you make again.  This will, of course, improve your statistics and visibility on your posts.

One thing to keep in mind is that people who actually don’t want to see your posts are now more likely to ‘unlike’ your page so that they don’t see it anymore.  This could cause a small spike in the number of unlikes you receive over the coming weeks.  In the long run, however, this should prove to be a positive update for marketers.
