Push Notification Double Retention Rates

A new report from Kahuna finds that app retention rates at key points are more than doubled when using push notifications.  If you develop or promote mobile apps, this report will make it very clear that you MUST start including push notifications within your apps.

The report looked at data for more than 39 million users, and found that the average app retention rate at 30, 60 and 90 days is consistently more than double when push notifications are used. For those who don’t know, these notifications allow app developers to send alerts to a device.  Sometimes the alert is a notification of a special within the app.  Other times it is just a quick reminder to open the app again.  Whatever the case, these reminders really keep people using the app.

Of course, push notifications need to be opted in, but the majority of people who start using an app will allow push notifications when offered.

The following are the specific numbers with and without push notifications:

  • 30 Days After App Install – 45.3% of users still active with push notifications, 20.4% without.
  • 60 Days After App Install – 35% of users still active with push notifications, 14.2% without.
  • 90 Days After App Install – 27.6% of users still active with push notifications, 10.1 without.

These are some incredible numbers, and it makes it very clear that push notifications are absolutely essential for the success of any app’s success.  Whether you’re making money through in-app purchases or ads, these push notifications will have a dramatic impact on your bottom line.
