How to Attract Traffic from Big Names

No matter what kind of business you’re running or promoting, it is important to always be looking for a way to get new people to see your site.  As we all know, a steady stream of new visitors is extremely important for the success of any digital marketer.  Unfortunately, most marketers just toss their new content up on their site, maybe share it on social media and then hope for the best.  There are, however, many things you can do to help dramatically improve your overall traffic over time.

The following tip is simple in concept and once you start doing it, you’ll only spend an extra couple minutes per week on it.  When done properly, however, it can send you a massive amount of quality traffic and get you some great new followers on your social media properties.  The trick is to find well-known names and brands related to your industry, and engage with them.  This isn’t a ‘cold-call’ or anything like that though.  Here is the technique, see if it can work for you.

Creating Content

The first thing you need to do is create new content that quotes or mentions someone important in your industry.  If you’re promoting a sports blog, for example, you could choose one or more sports stars and use them.  This part should be easy as most people already quote or at least reference major players in their industry within their content.   In fact, you may not even have to change your content marketing strategy at all!

Let Them Know

Where most people drop the ball is that after quoting or mentioning someone, they just publish the content and hope for the best.  Instead of this, make sure you reach out to the individual, individuals or brand that you mentioned in your content.  If you wrote a column where you mentioned your favorite sports star, for example, send them a message letting them know.  Don’t ask for anything in return, but just make them aware.  You would be surprised at how many well-known figures actually read and respond to things.

For example, if you mention Tiger Woods in a sports blog, you could just send a Tweet to them saying something like, “Hey Tiger, big fan.  Just wanted to let you know your interview last week really inspired me so I wrote about it on my blog.  LINK”

With someone as famous as Tiger woods, it will go ignored about 95% of the time.  Nothing wrong with that, Tiger’s a busy guy.  Keep in mind, however, that ‘well-known’ people in most industries don’t have millions of followers and will likely at least see that you Tweeted them.

Hope for a Response

If everything goes well, the person you mentioned will read your article or view your video.  They may then send out a Tweet in response to all their followers.  You’ve likely seen people you follow say something like, “Just got featured in an article on X blog, check it out.”  This is surprisingly common.  Their followers may then come to your site, enjoy your content and hopefully become fans of you too.

Don’t Get Discouraged

Remember, this won’t work most of the time.  Even for people who aren’t too popular, most people will ignore your message.  All it takes, however, is one person to send you your next lead and potential sale.  Once you set up a system around how to do this (or better yet, outsource it to your VA) you can be reaching out to dozens of people per month.  Over time, you’ll start getting the occasional response.

It is these little things that help the best marketers really set themselves apart.  Small efforts like this can really attract a lot of attention over time and help you to build your success.
