New Study On How Canadians Access Information

A study was recently completed that looked at how Canadian citizens access the internet, and what they are doing while online.  While most people won’t exactly be surprised by what this study found, it does show that there is a massive audience that is very active online in Canada.  Any marketers who aren’t actively promoting their products or services in that area may be missing out on a lot of potential.

The following is a quick summary of some of the key stats from the new report:

  • 53% of Canadians aged 18 and older use mobile devices as a primary way to connect to the internet.
  • The average Canadian spends 27 hours and 49 minutes per week on the Internet.
  • Over 20 Million Canadians use Facebook at least once per month.
  • Of those 20 Million Facebook users, 16 million of them use smartphones or tablets to access the social network.
  • 55% of Millennials (age 18-34) use digital media as their primary source of information. Compared with just 26% who use television, 16% who use radio and only 3% who use paper media.
  • When all adults over 18 are studied 37% use television to get information, 35% use digital media, 23% use radio and 5% use print. This shows that older generations are still largely using television and radio for their information gathering.

For those who are already marketing in Canada, or those who want to get into this market, this information clearly shows that digital media is the way of the future.  It further shows that mobile devices are going to be the primary vehicle used to access information, which means there is a lot of opportunity for marketers in the future.
