Google has recently published a new infographic that provides a lot of valuable information about running ads, and how to get them viewed by as many people as possible. In the infographic they release a lot of very valuable information, and some that may be quite surprising to some people.
If you are someone who runs display ads, whether through Google or not, this is definitely an infographic that you will want to take some time to review. The following are some of the most interesting pieces of information that I found provided:
- Defining Viewable Impressions – One nice thing about this graphic is that they actually define what they consider a viewed ad. It is any ad that has 50% of its pixel’s in view on the screen for at least one second.
- Low View Rate – Google reports that 56.1% of all display ads are not viewed at all. Given the fairly low standards needed to be considered viewed, this is quite a low number.
- Best Positioning – Interestingly, Google reports that the best position for an ad is just above the fold, not near the top like may people have previously believed.
- Best Ad Sizes – The best ad size is the vertical size of 120×240. This allows the ad to remain on the page for a longer amount of time.
- Most Popular Ad Size – The most popular size ad is 468×60, the normal banner ad. This gets 48.2% of all display ads.
- Above the Fold Viewability – Ads that appear above the fold are still only viewed 68% of the time.
Going through the graphic, there is quite a bit more information about things like which types of industries perform the best with display ads, and more.
