Pinterest – It’s not just for the ladies anymore

Pinterest has been one of the hottest social networks over the last year or two, and one of the most effective ways to drive quality traffic.  The one potential problem marketers had run into, however, was that the site was primarily used by women.

According to a recent announcement, however, that may not be the case anymore.  Over the past year, 1/3 of new signups have been men, which is a much faster rate than in the past.  In addition, for emerging markets, the split is closer to 50/50.  As of May, when RJMetrics released a study, Pinterest was still about 80% women, but according to these new stats, it seems that this number will likely drop significantly in the future.

Another interesting point that Pinterest made was that this year, more men in the United States will use Pinterest than will read GQ or Sports Illustrated.  Combined.  This is quite impressive when you think of how powerful a marketing tool those two men’s focused magazines can be, yet many marketers are overlooking Pinterest.

In fact, Pinterest reports that in the past 12 months alone, they have doubled the number of male users on their site.  It is not really clear whether this is the result of any specific action taken by Pinterest, or if men are just starting to realize that the site has a lot to offer them as well.

Whatever the case, however, marketers who are targeting men or even a mixed audience will certainly want to take another look Pinterest.
