One of the biggest parts of the new “Twitter Fabric” development platform is the new login system they are calling ‘digits.’ The system will make it so people don’t have to use unique IDs and passwords on every site, and they don’t need to have a social media account, which is what many sites are offering for alternative login options. When developers implement digits, people will be able to set up a unique ID that is tied to their phone number.
Everything is verified via text messaging and will allow people to quickly login to any platform that uses the system. If the system catches on, it could effectively change the way people login to systems. You would no longer have to worry about managing dozens of different username and passwords, as it would all be tied to your phone number.
This would also make it much easier to stop account hacking, since as soon as it is discovered, the person with the actual phone could shut it down instantly via a text. This is much easier than trying to work with the customer support teams at any number of sites to try to convince them that you are the actual owner of a given account.
Digits launched on iOS and Android platforms today, and is available in 216 countries and 28 languages. According to Twitter, another big benefit of this is that people without email addresses can now easily login to sites that support digits. This helps to expand the target audience significantly, according to their research.
