Gmail Launches new “Inbox” Application

Google has officially announced the launch of ‘Inbox,’ which is an app that brings together all your notifications and other items into one place.  It starts out by displaying your email in a quick and easy way, but it will also display pictures, reminders, flights, receipts, and just about anything else that you want to keep track of online.

There are many nice features in the new app, including the ability to bundle together similar things like related emails or bank statements.  You can then move them out of sight with just a swipe.  You can also use the advanced search option (highlights) to find the information you need.  This will allow you to search through not just email, but any other items in the ‘inbox.’

Google is also promoting the reminders feature, which is far more than just a calendar or alert program.  When you add a reminder into your ‘inbox’ Google will be able to provide you with ‘assists’ to help get them done.  This could be adding in phone numbers, addresses, or any number of other things that are related to the item.

The big question for marketers will be related to how this will impact them.  For example, will it make it easier for people to group and ignore marketing emails?  Or, will it possibly make them more accessible and help to improve the percentage of people who are actually reading them?  We won’t know for a while, but it is definitely something we all need to keep a close eye on.
