Facebook has been a leader in providing markets the ability to advertise directly to people only with very specific interests. With their advanced marketing systems you have been able to display your ads only to people who ‘like’ certain things, or only those who fall into a specific demographic. In the last couple days, they have provided a few new options to choose from to help further drill down so that you are only showing your ads to the exact people you want.
The first option they have added is the ‘Internet Browser Used’ choice. You can now choose to only show your ads to people who primarily use the browser of your choice. In this section you can choose from any of the following options:
- Primary Browser: Chrome
- Primary Browser: Firefox
- Primary Browser: Internet Explorer
- Primary Browser: Opera
- Primary Browser: Safari
There are many different things that this option can be used for. If, for example, you develop web browser plugins, this is obviously a major benefit. With some research, however, you can easily spot trends related to which browser your audience is most likely to use.
The next new option that Facebook has added is the “Operating System Used.” Just like the OS choice, you’ll be able to pick from a wide range of different operating systems that are the primary choice for your audience. This can be very helpful for app install companies. You can also choose to only display your ads to the latest OS’s to try to target an audience that is always staying up to date with the latest tech trends.
Each marketer will have to determine how these new filters can be best used. Even if it doesn’t seem like they will be helpful at first, don’t just dismiss them. Run some split tests and see what you can learn about your audience behavior. You may be surprised.
