WordPress has been the most popular content management system in the world for quite a long time now, but according to a new report from W3Techs they have recently broken a new record. The CMS now powers 25% of all the websites in the world.
This is quite a remarkable feat considering just how many other content management systems there are out there, and how many different types of sites. WordPress is obviously extremely flexible and able to create virtually any type of site you can imagine.
The continued growth of the platform is incredible, and according to the report it is likely going to further increase its dominance in the years to come.
Not only is WordPress the most popular CMS out there, it is dominating all the competition by huge margins. The following is a breakdown of what percentage of total websites each of the top five content management systems currently run:
- WordPress – 25%
- Joomla – 2.8%
- Drupal – 2.1%
- Magento – 1.2%
- Blogger – 1.2%
While there is no doubt that WordPress will be the dominant CMS long into the future, this does not mean the other platforms are doing poorly. In fact, they are all growing very rapidly in terms of total sites using them. The fact that so many new websites are being created every day means that there is a huge amount of growth across the board.
WordPress, however, is attracting the bulk of the new sites too, which will allow the further growth of their lead. The report found that 29.5% of new sites in October 2015 were generated with WordPress. This means that their lead is further growing.
WordPress may be the largest CMS out there, but there is one category that beats it. 57.4% of all websites in the world are not using a CMS at all. These are sites that are directly coded with HTML/CSS and other languages.
Whether or not WordPress and other content management systems can attract existing webmasters to convert to their systems is something that will be very interesting to watch in the coming years.
