Galaxy Gear from Samsung Announced – iWatch to follow?

Samsung has officially announced their line of wearable gadgets, including the Galaxy Gear smartwatch.  The announcement came at the IFA conference in Berlin, along with announcements concerning the Galaxy Note 3, and a brand new 10-inch Galaxy Tablet.  Rumors suggest that at next weeks Apple press conference, they will also be releasing the iWatch, which will undoubtedly have similar features to the smartwatch.  This will be seen by many as another example of Apple lagging behind other manufacturers lately.

The Samsung Smartwatch is set to be sold at $299, which is higher than other smart watches on the market, though the technical specs are also better than the competition at this point.  Boasting an 800 MHz processor, 1.9 megapixel camera, the ability to record and play back video and much more, this watch can do quite a bit.  It also comes pre-loaded with a variety of different apps including news apps, scheduling and reminder apps, location sharing apps, eBay apps and the MyFitnessPal app for helping ot keep track of your exercise.

Of course, whether or not there is a market for a smart watch has yet to be seen.  Many of the features of the watch will require that it is synced with your Samsung phone, through blue tooth.  The hope is that this will encourage people to purchase extra gadgets, such as this watch, when they already have a smartphone.  Brand loyalty goes up, which will bring with it increased profits.  They need to get people to buy into the fact that they need their watch to take over some of the functionality which they can already get from their phone.

That being said, however, it’s never a good idea to bet against innovative technologies, and wearable gadgets will almost certainly have a major role for consumers in the future.

It will be interesting to compare the iWatch (if rumors are true) with the smartwatch from Samsung.  They will be the most technologically advanced wearable watches on the market, so if this type of gadget is going to be a success, it will largely depend on these two products.
