Amazon #1 For Purchase Decisions

A new survey was recently published that looked at how consumers are deciding to make purchases today.  The survey went out to 2000 US consumers and asked a variety of questions.  The survey was completed BloomReach, an eCommerce Personalization company. The most interesting one was focused on how people begin their shopping or researching for making a purchase.

44% of respondents said that when looking to make a purchase, they start out by going to Amazon.   34% said they go to search engines and only 21% said they start by going to a retailer site.

This is another sign of just how important Amazon can be when it comes to driving sales.  Many marketers use Amazon to actually sell their products, but is not always possible or wise.  Even companies that don’t sell their products directly on Amazon, however, can often benefit from the retail giant.

Having positive reviews on your products (even if not sold by you), for example, can be very helpful.  Many people come to Amazon to do research but then make a purchase directly through a retailer’s website or even go into a physical store to make the purchase.

With this in mind, brands that don’t sell through Amazon don’t have to worry quite as much.  Simply being aware of the dominance Amazon is building in this area, however, is very important.  Knowing how it can impact your business and what you can do to help improve your bottom line will be essential today and long into the future.
