Twitter and Adult Marketing

Social media is reinventing the marketing industry. Never before have words, ideas, and brands been able to catch fire and reach so many people simultaneously. Hashtags and followers bring the customers to you, and it doesn’t cost a dime. Usually.

Facebook has developed some issues with their algorithm recently, making organic likes and shares harder to come by. Once a page reaches a certain number of “likes”, the owners of the page are urged by Facebook to pay to promote their posts. If the owner of the page chooses not to promote, their posts do not show up as frequently on their followers time lines. There are workarounds for this for marketers in general; however, adult marketers face an even bigger problem.

Facebook and Instagram are two of the largest social networks in existence today, each boasting a massive consumer base. They also have very strict guidelines about what can and cannot be posted. Adult affiliates, cam girls, and pornographic sites receive the most traffic when they advertise with a little preview. Boobs beat banner blindness, after all. Australian adult performer Ashton Avenue says that she has been banned from Facebook, and has owned multiple Instagram profiles which have been shut down. She, along with many other adult performers, has moved her social media outreach to Twitter.

Twitter’s content rules are very lenient. Their mission is to provide a platform for any individual or company to reach as many people as possible, and they value free speech and freedom of expression. To this end, their content guidelines cover as few things as possible: Impersonation, trademarks, private information, violence and threats, copyright, unlawful use, and misrepresentation of Twitter badges.

The only guidelines about pornography is that you may not have pornography in your profile picture, background image, or header image. These images are viewable by the general public, and must be safe for general consumption. The individual posts, however, can be marked as Adult Content, and are hidden from view for anyone aged 17 and under. These content restrictions are fantastic, as it means not only that you are not traumatizing anyone by posting graphic content; but you are also reaching exactly the demographic you need.

Posting daily, or even hourly updates on Twitter will increase traffic significantly. Proper use of #hashtags will make your content easily searchable, funneling traffic even farther. The social media aspect allows you to get real-time feedback from your customers, and allows performers to build relationships and develop repeat business. When used in conjunction with other proven marketing techniques, Twitter is an invaluable resource for anyone in the adult industry.
