MarketLive has released their third quarter performance index, which provides some details about digital marketing and consumer behaviors in this area. In the report, it was found that traffic from smart phones to e-commerce sites grew by more than 62% during the quarter. More impressively, the revenue generated through these smart phones went up by 141%. This is a clear indication that people are becoming far more comfortable making actual purchases from their smart phones, rather than just using them for research.
For tablets, both the traffic and the revenue grew by about 20%, which is still significant, though not quite as impressive. PCs were still the leader in overall traffic and revenue, but that lead is quickly fading away. Currently, 57% of traffic to ecommerce sites comes from PCs, and 76% of the revenue.
As the PC dominance dwindles over the coming years, however, marketers will need to either focus their efforts on improving their mobile experience, or be left behind and face shrinking profits. There is really no denying that mobile is the way people will be making purchases in the future, and while PCs aren’t likely to completely fade out any time soon, mobile platforms will undoubtedly overtake them as the leading way people make purchases online.
This report dug far deeper into who was making purchases, and what types of things they were buying. For example, they found that apparel shopping online continues to go up well, as does online shopping from brick & mortar stores.
