Performics Appoints New Management Team

2

Performics, the performance marketing agency owned by Publicis Groupe, today announced a new global leadership team in support of its burgeoning worldwide network. Daina Middleton, current U.S. CEO, expands her role and is promoted to Worldwide CEO based in Chicago, effective immediately.

Performics currently operates in 14 countries and plans additional expansion in 2012. To further support this growth, Performics also announces a new regional management structure. Frederic Joseph becomes CEO for Performics in Europe, Middle East, Africa, based in London; and Gareth Mulryan is the new Regional Director in Asia Pacific, based in Shanghai.

Joseph and Mulryan will report to Middleton and, with Vice Chairman Andras Vigh, complete the new global management team. Vigh will have network development responsibilities for Performics, in addition to his role as Chairman for VivaKi in Greater China.

“Performics has achieved phenomenal growth over the past year through the development of our worldwide network of talent,” commented Middleton. “We are committed to redefining performance marketing around the world, and will achieve this by providing performance marketing services across search, affiliate partnerships, performance display and social marketing resulting in a consistent global offering for our valued clients.”

Prior to her role as U.S. CEO, Middleton spent two years at Publicis Groupe’s Moxie, after a distinguished tenure at Hewlett-Packard. Joseph is a veteran of Publicis Groupe, responsible for launching Zed Digital in France and Europe within the past 10 years. Mulryan most recently led search marketing for Performics in Asia Pacific, after successfully leading digital efforts at ZenithOptimedia.

Huge Growth in Affiliate Marketing Says IAB

4

Affiliate marketing spend is expected to increase in 2012, according to a survey from the IAB.

Over the next 12 months, growth in Affiliate advertising is expected to increase with 77% of respondents stating that their marketing spend for affiliates had grown this year, while another 71% would grow further next year.

140 brands were involved with survey, which aims to offer insight into advertiser’s opinions of the affiliate marketing sector.

The results also found that further education was necessary amongst senior marketers, with 50% admitting that there was a knowledge gap in affiliate marketing at CEO level.

One quarter of respondents also said that they spent more than 20% of their budget on the channel, while 93% said that they would recommend it as an effective marketing channel.

Nearly one fifth (19%) claimed that they were spending over £100,000 a month on affiliate commissions, while 59% said that they had worked with just one affiliate network in order to manage their programmes.

Helen Southgate, chairperson of the IAB Affiliate Marketing Council, commented: “At a time when the economy is suffering it was really positive to see that 77% of advertisers had seen growth in the channel year on year and over 70% were expecting the channel to grow again in 2012. Affiliate Marketing is one of the few channels that is a performance only model so it makes real sense for Clients to invest their marketing budget here as there is less risk. It was really interesting to see that nearly 20% of respondents said they spent over £100k in affiliate commissions a month and over one quarter said that affiliates account for more than 20% of online budgets. This indicates affiliates are a significant channel in these brands marketing mix. The council is looking to run these surveys at least twice yearly so will be interesting to compare results in 2012.”

Facebook Now Allows Conversion Tracking

4

If you didn’t know, until September 2010, Facebook actually had a very nice conversion tracking program. Yes, in the start of their program, when they actually liked affiliates, they had an entire affiliate team that dealt with their questions. Well, for those who follow Facebook, sometime last year they decided to completely stop supporting affiliates and doing all their best to prevent direct response programs from being promoted on Facebook. In fact, they’ve admitted that they’ve completely blocked the urls from several major affiliate networks.

So what is this about them coming back with Conversion Tracking, you say? Well, according to reports by several companies, Facebook actually has a conversion tracking program that allows special advertisers to track conversions from Facebook and optimize. Note that this is only allowed for “special advertisers” and the general public can’t use it. Why? Simply put, Facebook has been attempting to move away from being a ROI based platform like, Google and convince brands that they need to use it mainly for branding.

If they let everyone know that many agencies have access to this conversion tracking back-end, then people will start asking the real question about Facebook: What is its value, how good is it really for advertisers. With the average facebook user seeing hundreds if not thousands of ads a day, brands have to believe that the expensive prices they are getting for 100 likes to their page is worthwhile. Simply put, Facebook isn’t Google and the ad value is much much less than Google.

Fight Fraudsters Dead: ScrubKit and Brian McLevis Kill Fraud Pt.2

4

Do you believe there is such a thing as “gray-hat” techniques, why and why not?
I usually get a kick out of terms such as white hat, gray hat and black hat. They’re just such vague terms.

Gray hat could easily mean that you’re exploiting a well-established website with a link that leads to an offer. A consumer clicking the link and filling out the offer is usually a very legitimate lead. This is where it gets interesting though, because the affiliate is actually providing the advertiser with high-quality leads that are backing out. Chances are though, they’re in violation of the aforementioned websites TOS.

Back in 2006 and prior you would see a lot of this activity. Companies were not as quick to care as much – I mean they made attempts to stop it, but nothing major. Nowadays, Facebook, Craigslist and MySpace are not messing around. They will slap you a C&D so fast and you’d be wise to stop doing what you’re doing if this ever happens.

I’m even going to touch on the dreaded “black hat” phrase because people oftentimes misconstrue blackhat with fraud no matter what.  If you’re coining the term blackhat with a method some jerkoff posted on a blackhat community forum that completely attempts to fraud a company outright – ultimately causing the company to lose money – than you’re committing fraud. Not utilizing blackhat methods.

I think that this is where the whole white hat, gray hat and black hat terms get mixed up and incorrectly labeled.

When it all comes down to it, we’re all human and in our heart of hearts, know if what we’re doing is right or not. If you’re out to defraud a company just to make a quick buck then you’re stealing and doing something unethical — so just don’t do it. Instead, spend your time and efforts learning how to make legitimate cash, build up your business and scale it up. It might be a bit tougher just starting out this way as you’re likely going to have to put some of your own money on the line – not to mention putting in the necessary time and hard work to get it going. In the long run though, you can make some money. It’s pretty simple, really.

How do you respond to criticism from some affiliates who see fraud protection as “Snitching”
If you’re defrauding a company then it’s the same thing as going to the bank and trying to rob them for money. When you run into a network that is running Scrubkit, it’s just game over, friend.

And as for it being considered snitching? Seriously?

How about you go get a life and stop trying to rip off people running legitimate businesses? Now there’s an idea for the ages!

When does fraud in your opinion go from an “issue” to “criminal?”
Fraud is an issue and, as much as it pains me to say it, will probably always be an issue. I’m not an attorney and would ultimately have you defer to your own legal counsel in order to answer this question correctly.

In my eyes, if you pay out for fraud, find out the traffic was fraudlent and lose money, then it seems it would become criminal because the affiliate effectively stole from you. There are probably variously different ways to counteract this type of problem. One is to contact the local authorities to file a complaint against the fraudster in question, stating how they defrauded your company etc. etc. They would have an officially recorded complaint for fraud and, trust me, that isn’t something they’re going to want on file.

You could also get legal representation and prosecute the individual for the money they stole from you. I know a lot of companies that have filed police reports against fraudsters and it did really help the situation. Not a lot of people know you can do this, but you can and I strongly encourage it.

Is the FTC’s compliance efforts the right direction? What do you recommend them to look at next?
The FTC is someone who looks out for everyone’s best interest and I think that overall they’re doing a good job. One thing I don’t completely agree with is that they’re not intimate enough with the industry and some of the rules and regulations that they pass are not exactly fair to some companies. I know they have good intentions and in regards to them protecting the general population, they’re doing a pretty good job.

What’s the next step in compliance in 2012?
You’re going to find that Scrubkit is going to become the industry standard for fraud and risk management. Or at least, that’s the goal. And thus far, any goal we have set has been achieved in practically no time at all.

We’ve secured a vast amount of clients and are working with tracking system vendors to be their preferred fraud prevention/risk management system. We have even conversed about white labeling our system so it will act as the network tracking system’s own solution. Scrubkit has a very, very good reputation as evidenced by the loyalty and enthusiasm of our clients. They will tell you that we go over and above what they would expect from the average fraud and risk management company.

We don’t simply provide you with the system and say, “Here you go. Good luck!” Instead, we actually have frequent conversations with our clients about what is going on in the industry in regards to fraud. The comments and feedback we’ve received have been nothing but stellar and our clients are extremely thankful we’re finally helping them manage and control their networks fraudulent traffic.

How hard is it to get setup and integrated with Scrubkit?
We’ve already hashed out the hard part with most of the major tracking system vendors out there so it’s really just a matter of the client providing us with their API key. With that, we can have the client fully operational in about 24 hours. There’s absolutely no management, maintenance, pixel placing in regards to advertisers, adding affiliates, adding offers, performing upkeep of any kind or anything else of the sort. You receive your username and password for your account and we hold a training session using your live data where we point out immediate risk. Only once we make sure you’re 110% comfortable using the system do we hand over the reins to you completely.

We almost never have a client come to us after the tutorial session confused or needing any more hands-on support, but if they do, we’d be happy to offer it!

And don’t misconstrue that with the system not being extremely cutting edge and robust, because Scrubkit is by far the most advanced fraud and risk management system in the entire space. And this claim is coming from our clients – not us. They love it and we love providing it to them.

Whenever we come across networks or advertisers that are using a customer built tracking system, they usually receive API documents that will help their development team get started with us. We have even encountered clients with their own internal fraud systems that, upon seeing what Scrubkit can do, immediately hopped on board with us.

You just have to realize that Scrubkit is the combined effort of a massive amount of clients (a community, really) that all come to us with issues to which we provide solutions. Our solutions not only benefit the client who initially requested it, but also the entirety of our client base. So the more feedback we get from our clients, the stronger and more effective it ultimately makes the system.

What are the next steps for Scrubkit?  Does is just stop here?
We’ve really only touched the tip of the iceberg in regard to fraud and risk management. We have extensive plans to reach out to the other areas of the performance marketing industry and provide a variety of other services that will absolutely, positively just blow your mind away. I mean, not that we haven’t already done that in the first place!

I’m going to keep this answer relatively low key because I want to avoid prying eyes in regards to what our plans are for the future. But I can assure you that what we have in store for our clients is going to be frigging amazing!

Who are the creators behind Scrubkit?
I handle the business side of managing Scrubkit. This consists of getting new clients on board, training new clients, supporting existing clients, coming up with new ways to combat fraud, conversing with the existing clients to understand new issues, and making sure we’re getting paid on time. I also bring a lot of the ideas to the team so that they are implemented into the system.

Chris is our lead developer and is the brainchild behind all of the magic code. His duties consist of architecting, programming, database and system administration of Scrubkit. Heck, he even lays down the user interface for the system which is a real rarity nowadays with coders. He’s been a professional coder his whole life and isn’t just some script kiddie. I’d even go so far as to say he’s one of the best coders the industry has ever seen. He’s a machine!

Then there’s Paul, the talented individual that handles business development and seeks out potential clients. He has a thing about him that makes people really like him and he’s not only a great guy in general but is truly an excellent and valuable asset to building out our client base.

We’ve all brought something to the table and the system we’ve built has been delivered to some very reputable clients already. We’ve even had some Fortune 500 companies inquiring with us about becoming their fraud/risk management solution.

Basically, we’re all extremely passionate about combatting and preventing fraud of any and all kinds. And I think this really shines through in regards to the quality and usefulness of Scrubkit as a whole.

Our of all the tracking system vendors who has been the most helpful in providing resources and time?
Hands down, no further questions needed: CAKE.

They’ve thus far been the most instrumental for us with their tailored API’s in order to make Scrubkit work as consistently and smoothly as it does.

Jeff, Dave, Andy, Garth and the whole damn crew over there support us 110% and we truly do appreciate it. We really owe them a great deal in that they’ve truly helped us get off the ground so to speak. Our hats go off to CAKE for their support that they’ve given and we’ll never forget what they’ve done for us.

So consider this an official “Thank you!” to you CAKE for the hard work, dedication and kindness you’ve shown to us thus far. They really are the most innovate, robust and awesome tracking system on the market today – not to mention that they have the best name, hands down!

If you have yet to demo CAKE, I highly, highly suggest that you get in touch with them in order to do so. Just like Scrubkit, CAKE is going to take over the industry with their innovative and comprehensive tracking system. There literally isn’t any other tracking system out there that can deliver as many functions and features combined with their phenomenal customer support. I’ve been in the field for 15 years now and CAKE backs their product with the highest level of support and dedication that I’ve yet seen in a technical company.

What other dreams and passions do you have?
I want to provide for my wonderful and beautiful wife and ensure that she’s taken care of and has every single thing she ever wants and can dream of. I met her 12 years ago and she’s without-a-doubt the love of my life.

We have a beautiful little boy named Max who is now 2 ½ years old and he is also the light of my life. He just brightens up my day, there’s no other way to explain it. Even though he can be a little rascal sometimes, he’s the cutest thing in the world! Anybody that has kids knows exactly what I’m saying here as they literally change your life. And for the better in a very good, positive way.

I ultimately want to pave the way for his education and provide for him the finer things in life whilst also instilling in him the value of hard work and earning what you want through good old fashioned busting your ass.

What is your dream car?
To be completely honest, I have a ’67 Chevy Camaro RS/SS with a 496 big block and Tremec TJO 5-speed with Carbon Fiber Synchro disks planting rubber to the pavement. I am a gear head and wrench on my car myself. It’s truly one of my biggest passions.

The car is absolutely beautiful – not as beautiful as my wife and son Max, but beautiful in a different way!

Rarely do I allow anyone else to touch the car unless it’s absolutely needed (see: emm, wiring – ugghhh). My car gives me a proper outlet and provides me to do something else besides sitting behind a computer all day long. I have burns, cuts, busted and bloody knuckles and perma-grease fingernails, bruises – everything you’d expect to go along with a true passion for wrenching on one’s own car.

If you ever get the chance then head on over to http://mybadasscamaro.com and check out the pictures. It’s won trophies at shows and eyes are super glued to it whenever it’s driving down the road. There’s really nothing better in the world than strapping my little boy Max in the seat and going for a cruise. He absolutely loves the car and calls it the “vroom vroom!” I have about eight hours of dyno tuning time on the car and it was done by Chris at Wichita Dyno. He is most definitely the master at tuning. The numbers on his chassis dyno are a little low compared to others, but the Camaro puts down 499hp and 532ft pounds of torque to the wheels, so it more than makes up for it.

But yeah, I’d say I already have my dream car!

What do you want to say in closing?
Back to the original topic of Scrubkit, if you’re looking for a robust breed of fraud/risk management system then send me an email via business@Scrubkit.com. Or you can just submit the form on the Contact Us page of the Scrubkit site. If you’re at all concerned about pricing, it will just cost you about ~2% of your monthly gross revenue to run our system. We run on a month-to-month contract structure so there’s literally no commitment on your part at all. To date, we have not had a single client cancel and every single one of those clients is operating on the same monthly contract. This just goes to show you how effective and fantastic Scrubkit truly is.

For the measly 2% of your monthly gross revenue, you can effectively secure solid relationships with your advertisers since you’ll essentially be offering them fraud protection for free. This will secure you higher payouts thanks to your quality being superior and will allow you to negotiate much quicker payout terms.

The best part of all though is that it allows you to realize your true and actual revenue throughout the month since you know you won’t be getting hit with hundreds of chargebacks at the end of the month. We’ve had clients tell us countless amounts of times that Scrubkit actually paid for itself ten times over because of the money they saved by not having to pay out for fraud while also allowing them to build extremely solid and beneficial relationships with their network partners and advertisers.

Scrubkit will not only pay for itself but will also help make you a lot more money.

I mean, it’s really just a no-brainer. Scrubkit is the way to go in the fraud and risk management arena. And that’s a fact!

Scrubkit Owned by Felon \\ Christopher Kennedy \\ Brian McLevis

12

The felony conspiracy to commit wire fraud charge was against Christopher Kennedy, who faces a maximum 5-year prison term, centers around his website the authorities claim he owns called saucekit. The now-defunct site lets nefarious website owners purchase his cookie-stuffing code to unwittingly dupe eBay to pay those site owners thousands of dollars in advertising referral fees, the authorities said.

Authorities in San Jose, California, declined to say how many website owners – or underground eBay affiliates – had purchased the program, or how much Kennedy charged. But message boards and court documents claim that some underground entrepreneurs made up to $10,000 monthly in fraudulent eBay payments.

Kennedy spent 6 months in federal prison for his crimes.

Here’s the Scrubkit information.

Google to Challenge Amazon

8

ADOTAS – According to both the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times, who had spoken with insiders who weren’t authorized yet to speak on the record about the project, Google is working on a service that, for a fee, will ship and deliver products within a day after they’re ordered. Not a lot of details are available at this juncture: The service might launch sometime in 2012, it might involve some kind of partnership with a major shipping company, and while the Journal says Google is “in talks with major retailers,” the only retailer who’s confirmed they’d been approached to partner with the search behemoth is Macy’s (and a Macy’s representative says the company hasn’t made any decisions yet). What is clear is that this new service would be a parallel and competitor to Amazon Prime, Amazon’s subscriber service that offers two-day shipping (and also access to streaming movies and Kindle books) at a cost of $79 per year.

Google’s not looking explicitly to become a retailer, or to build stores or warehouses, according to those sources. The new service would lean on Google’s product search feature, and a partnering company or companies would handle shipping. The idea is that the service would provide incentive for customers to use Google’s product search. Amazon right now is the reigning go-to spot for online shopping — according to ComScore statistics, Amazon’s website has handled three to four times as many product-related searches as Google’s product search has over the past year. Amazon has reported a 42 percent increase in sales for the first nine months of 2011, compared to 2010, and Amazon Prime certainly had something to do with that. Google obviously has a lot to gain by honing in on the action, or at least it would be well served to strike back and protect its position as the web’s top seller of online advertising. Google’s made some inroads towards a burlier product search function lately, launching Google Trusted Stores in October for retailers that meet certain customer service standards (and share shipping and customer service data with Google) and offering customer ratings and reviews (a la Amazon). Today’s reports indicate more clearly where Google is going with this.

Report: Google Rules the World

Report: Google Rules the World

ZenithOptimedia has issued a report that shows that Google controls over 44% of the global online advertising, making it easily the dominant player in the industy.

Internet advertising is now clearly dominated by Google, which has increased its share of the internet ad market from 34.9% in 2006 to 44.1% in 2010. Over this time Google has tightened its grip on global search (raising its share of searches from 72% in 2006 to 85% now) and established a lead in traditional display and online video with the help of the acquisition and development of companies like DoubleClick and YouTube. In addition, its three main early competitors (Microsoft, Yahoo! and AOL) have failed to match this pace of development and lost a lot of ground; their combined market share fell from 33.1% in 2006 to 13.8% in 2010. Since 2006 Facebook has established itself as a major supplier, increasing its market share from just 0.2% to 3.1% in 2010. Last year Facebook doubled its share and overtook AOL; at its current pace of growth it is likely to overtake Microsoft by the end of 2011.

The problem with this report, as mentioned by several commentators already, is that Google is facing possible anti-trust lawsuits. It’s very hard to make the argument that they aren’t dominating the market when…they are dominating the market.

Why I hate Idiotic Intro Mails from Affiliate Managers

9

On a weekly basis I receive at least a dozen introduction emails from affiliate managers looking to do business with me. They somehow have received a list of people within the industry and are sending out general emails to people about their programs. Since I’m not an affiliate, per se, and spend most of my time either writing or advising companies about their affiliate programs, so I’m a poor contact in first place.

Here’s an example of an idiotic email from a guy that was spammed to me this morning.

Hi I am writing this mail to you on behalf of Tyroo Media Pvt Ltd.

We are looking to partner with international publishers for promoting our campaigns in India.

To give you little insight – Tyroo is one of the largest media buying partners in India dealing with more than 40 advertisers across categories like retail, travel , classifieds ,BFSI , auto etc for online promotion . Group On (SoSasta), shine.com, naukri , simply marry ,Apollo munich , Citi bank  , Microsoft , yahoo messenger, MMT , fashion&you , bagittoday ,Letsbuy ,  dealsandyou, Koovs, godrej powerplay, gojiyo, Myntra, 20North are some of our advertisers . We are working on different revenue models like CPL,CPA and many more. We would like to partner with you for our advertisers.

I am mailing you the link and request you to join our network.  (link removed)

Please let me know if you need any help or in case you have any query.

I would appreciate if we can discuss this in detail.

Looking forward to your reply,

Thanks,
Shwetank Pandit
Skype id: imidiot
BD Executive at Tyroo Media Pvt Ltd

As I mentioned, this guy is an idiot in the first place, spamming a list that contains, among other things, members of the performance marketing media. On top of that, the problem with these emails that often ask people to join affiliate programs is that they are very impersonal. These emails are often more damaging than anything, because it makes the person on the other side look clueless about the industry. Sending anyone an email that you want them to join your network doesn’t really work.

What does work is an email that introduces yourself in a few words, and then has an easy call to action that doesn’t seem impersonal.

For example, the following email should have been sent:

I was wondering if you had time this week to discuss our new program. Tyroo Media is a major India-based company that works in the performance marketing industry and I’m curious if there is any way we can work together.

Sincerely,
Shwetank Pandit

It’s a simple email, it shows that you respect the persons time and that you aren’t just sending out spam with a signup link. It also addresses the issue that not everyone is exactly the same, but gives them the opportunity to respond and identify who they are, what their business model is and makes them think how they can work together. It’s insulting for many people to get an email that doesn’t value their time and asks people to sign up at a link. However, asking people about their business always gets results because people like talking about themselves.

Relationships, even with affiliates, need to be key. Asking someone to signup in an intro mail, not respecting their time, and not showing interest in their business is insulting and idiotic.

Top Five Affiliate Blogs You Must Read

The Performance Marketing industry is full of a lot of crap, and worse, a lot of crap that looks like it comes from experts. Chinese to Buy Yahoo?

5

ADOTAS – Eight days after the announcement that Microsoft had entered a nondisclosure bid with Yahoo — a move that indicated Microsoft was jockeying to bid on the down-on-its-luck search engine — reports have arisen that Chinese online retail giant Alibaba and Japanese telecom/e-commerce company SoftBank had entered were in “advanced talks” (Bloomberg  Media’s words) with Blackstone Group and Bain Capital to make a bid on Yahoo. Alibaba’s been rumored to be interested in bidding for some time, but few details have been confirmed thus far about the company’s potential partners and plans. Reportedly, the bid may end up at somewhere around $20 per share. Yahoo, it’s worth pointing out, already owns a 43 percent equity stake in Alibaba, while Softbank owns roughly 40 percent of Yahoo Japan.

Yahoo’s board is currently discussing offers from potential minority-stake bidders, but some Yahoo investors reportedly would rather the company be sold as a whole. According to a statement from Alibaba, that company hasn’t decided to make a bid on the whole company.

Google Rolls Out More Algorithm Changes

17

This week Google announced additions to new algorithm changes they began implementing last month. While the search giant makes around 500 small adjustments and tweaks every year, since November 14 they have made several major improvements:

Originality

Throughout 2011, Google has made major revisions to week their search results of low quality content that duplicates much of the information already available on the web. As a result, many sites have completely revamped their approach. Demand Media deleted over 300,000 eHow articles and Yahoo retired more than 75,000 pieces of content from their Associated Content division. This change provides even better information to figure out which of two similar web pages is the original.

Related Queries

Have you ever entered a search and Google offered alternative “related” results. If a rare word was in the original query, sometimes Google would drop that word when calculating alternative results. This change makes it statistically less likely that the alternative searches will rank as high as the primary search phrase.

Comprehensive Indexing

Long tail documents are now weighted heavier so they are more likely to move up in relevant searches.

New Classification for Parked Domains

Some marketers were making a tidy income from advertising on parked domains. The problem was that many had no valuable or useful content for web visitors. The new algorithm automatically detects parked domains and, for the most part, eliminates them from search results.

Added Autocompletes

When you typing a phrase in the Google search box, it will start to autocomplete the phrase. This change strikes a better balance between your actual phrase and the alternative predictions the system was calculating.

Image Queries

Top Result Selection

Previously it was possible for one domain to have several results crowding the top of search engine results pages. In addition, the code is now easier for the company to maintain and adjust for future changes.

Fresher Blog Search Results

Again, emphasis is being placed on fresher and more accurate results. This change to the blog search index brings newer and better blog posts to the top of the search results.

With the incredible popularity of tablets, this change makes minor color and layout changes to improve readability and usability on mobile devices.
