Mobile Ad Spend to Surpass Desktop Next Year

Mobile ad spend is forecasted to bring in $99.3 Billion next year, according to Zenith.  This estimate has it beating desktop advertising, which is expected to bring in $97.4 billion, for the first time ever.  Zenith predicted over a year ago that mobile overtaking desktop would not happen until at least 2018, but they have revised those predictions due to the fact that mobile just keeps on growing at incredible rates.

Last year mobile had a 95% growth rate, and Zenith predicted it to grow at another 46% this year and then 29% in the following two years.  This will put mobile at 58% by 2018 (or even more, if mobile continues to outpace predictions).

Desktop ads are also shrinking, but not by much currently.  They shrunk by .2% in 2015 and will shrink by about 3.1% this year.  This shows that the overall ad industry is still growing at a very rapid pace.  This, of course, is a good sign for all digital marketers who make a living either using online ads or displaying them.

The Zenith report said, “Banner ads are much less effective on mobile devices than on desktops.  Consumers find them more intrusive, and are more likely to click on them by accident than by design.”

Within mobile, video ads are making a major impact.  They are growing by about 20% or more this year, and are predicted to continue at that pace for the next several years at least.

Overall, the digital ad industry appears to be quite healthy, as long as people are keeping up with the trend toward mobile and especially toward video.
